Anthony Edwards, the rising star of the Minnesota Timberwolves, has firmly ruled out any future participation in the FIBA Basketball World Cup for Team USA when asked about his interest in the tournament after the 2024 Olympic Games, by the Athletic’s Joe Vardon.

“Hell nah.”

This declaration comes after Edwards played a crucial role in helping the United States secure gold at the Paris Olympics, where he averaged 12.8 points and 1.2 assists in 16.3 minutes per game across six appearances.

Edwards’ decision is significant, considering his standout performance at the 2023 World Cup, where he led Team USA in scoring with 18.9 points per game over eight matches. Despite the team finishing a disappointing fourth after a loss to Canada, Edwards emerged as a key player, showcasing his potential to be a cornerstone for USA Basketball in future international competitions.

At just 23 years old, Edwards is entering the prime of his career, making him an ideal candidate for USA Basketball to build around as they prepare for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. His reluctance to participate in future World Cups, however, presents a challenge for USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill.

Hill may now face the daunting task of assembling one roster for the World Cup and a nearly different team for the Olympics, a strategy that could hinder the team’s cohesion and overall performance.

The lack of continuity within Team USA, as highlighted by Edwards’ comments, could potentially be a significant disadvantage as the global competition continues to strengthen.

With other countries benefiting from consistent participation by their top players in successive major tournaments, Edwards’ absence from the World Cup could impact the United States’ chances of maintaining its dominance on the world stage. Fans might need to prepare for a possible disappointment if the U.S. fails to medal in the upcoming World Cup without Edwards leading the charge.

Team USA Shouldn’t Make The Same Mistake They Made In 2023 FIBA World Cup

Team USA must avoid repeating the mistakes of the 2023 FIBA World Cup if they hope to maintain their dominance in international basketball. In 2023, Team USA made a critical error by fielding a young, inexperienced, and undersized squad without fully understanding the correct player fit and balance needed for success on the global stage. This miscalculation resulted in a disappointing fourth-place finish, far below the standards expected of the United States.

The 2023 roster included players like Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Paolo Banchero, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Brandon Ingram, Jaren Jackson Jr., Walker Kessler, Bobby Portis, and Austin Reaves. While these players are undoubtedly talented, the team lacked the size, experience, and cohesion necessary to compete against the world’s best. The result was a roster that struggled against more seasoned and physically imposing international teams.

This disappointing outcome served as a wake-up call, prompting USA Basketball to bring out the heavy artillery for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 2024 roster, featuring NBA legends like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday, Anthony Davis, and Bam Adebayo, along with holdovers like Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton, was a clear statement of intent. The result was a dominant performance and a gold medal for Team USA, reaffirming their place at the top of the basketball world.

However, with many of these older stars likely stepping away from international play, USA Basketball now faces the challenge of building a team that can compete consistently year after year. The key to sustained success will be assembling a roster that not only includes the brightest young talents but also strikes the right balance of experience, size, and skill. This means avoiding the pitfalls of the 2023 World Cup by ensuring that future squads are better prepared and more strategically constructed.

As the rest of the world continues to close the gap, Team USA can no longer rely solely on raw talent. They must prioritize chemistry, versatility, and experience, building a team that can grow together over multiple tournaments. By learning from the mistakes of 2023, Team USA can ensure they remain at the pinnacle of international basketball for years to come.
