The New York Knicks are officially a title contender in the 2024-25 NBA seasons after trading for budding All-Star wing Mikal Bridges and re-signing two-way star OG Anunoby to pair with Jalen Brunson. The Knicks had a strong season by reaching Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs this year but were unable to progress without Julius Randle available and Brunson dealing with nagging injuries.

Looking ahead to next season, the Knicks might have a stacked roster but they could be in the market for one more blockbuster move to bring in an elite center to have the best starting lineup in the NBA. Here are the best centers the Knicks can acquire this summer.

1. Karl-Anthony Towns

Karl-Anthony Towns - New York Knicks

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Karl-Anthony Towns

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, Miles McBride, 2025 First-Round Pick (DET), 2027 First-Round Pick (NYK)

Karl-Anthony Towns has established himself as one of the premier centers in the NBA, known for his versatile offensive game and impressive skill set. In the 2023-24 season, Towns averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, showcasing his ability to contribute across multiple statistical categories. His shooting prowess, particularly from beyond the arc, sets him apart from traditional centers. Towns shot 41.6% from three-point range, making him a significant floor-spacing threat and creating more opportunities for the Knicks’ perimeter players like Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges.

Defensively, Towns has shown improvements, averaging 0.7 blocks per game. While not known as a defensive anchor, his ability to stretch the floor and facilitate the offense can greatly benefit the Knicks. Pairing him with defensive stalwart OG Anunoby and the versatile Mikal Bridges can compensate for any defensive shortcomings, making Towns a valuable addition. The trade for Towns would cost the Knicks Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, Miles McBride, and two first-round picks, but the offensive firepower and versatility he brings could elevate the Knicks to true title contention.

2. Alperen Sengun

Alperen Sengun - New York Knicks

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Alperen Sengun, Jeff Green, Jock Landale

Houston Rockets Receive: Julius Randle, 2025 First-Round Pick (DET), 2027 First-Round Pick (NYK)

Alperen Sengun has quickly become one of the most promising young centers in the NBA, thanks to his unique blend of skills and basketball IQ. In the 2023-24 season, Sengun averaged 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game, demonstrating his all-around game and ability to impact both ends of the floor. His exceptional passing skills for a big man allow him to facilitate the offense from the post, making him a valuable asset in the Knicks’ lineup.

Defensively, Sengun has made strides, averaging 1.2 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. His ability to protect the rim, coupled with his offensive versatility, makes him an intriguing target for the Knicks. Acquiring Sengun would involve trading Julius Randle and two first-round picks, but the inclusion of veterans Jeff Green and Jock Landale adds depth to the Knicks’ frontcourt. Sengun’s potential to develop into a star center aligns with the Knicks’ timeline and ambitions, making this a move that can pay dividends in both the short and long term.

3. Myles Turner

Myles Turner- New York Knicks

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Myles Turner, Jarace Walker

Indiana Pacers Receive: Julius Randle

Myles Turner has consistently been one of the league’s top shot-blockers, providing elite rim protection and defensive stability. In the 2023-24 season, Turner averaged 17.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game, highlighting his defensive prowess and ability to alter shots around the basket. His presence in the paint would significantly bolster the Knicks’ defense, allowing perimeter defenders like OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges to play more aggressively.

Offensively, Turner can stretch the floor, shooting 35.8% from three-point range. His ability to knock down perimeter shots creates spacing and opens up driving lanes for Jalen Brunson and other playmakers. The trade for Turner, which involves sending Julius Randle to the Pacers, would also bring in rookie forward Jarace Walker. Walker’s potential and Turner’s defensive impact make this a strategic move to enhance the Knicks’ lineup on both ends of the court.

4. Jarrett Allen

Jarrett Allen - New York Knicks

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Jarrett Allen, Dean Wade

Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: Julius Randle

Jarrett Allen is known for his elite shot-blocking and rebounding abilities, making him a defensive anchor for any team. In the 2023-24 season, Allen averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game, showcasing his ability to protect the rim and dominate the glass. His defensive presence would be invaluable for the Knicks, providing a solid foundation in the paint and improving their overall defensive efficiency.

Offensively, Allen excels as a lob threat and finisher around the rim, shooting 63.4% from the field. His ability to score efficiently in the paint complements the Knicks’ perimeter-oriented attack. The trade involving Julius Randle would also see Dean Wade joining the Knicks, adding depth and versatility to their frontcourt. Allen’s defensive impact and efficient scoring make him a perfect fit for the Knicks’ needs, enhancing their title aspirations.

5. Clint Capela

Clint Capela - New York Knicks

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Clint Capela, 2029 First-Round Pick

Atlanta Hawks Receive: Julius Randle

Clint Capela is a proven rim protector and rebounder, known for his defensive impact and ability to finish around the basket. In the 2023-24 season, Capela averaged 11.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game, providing consistent production and stability in the paint. His rebounding prowess would address one of the Knicks’ key areas of improvement, ensuring they control the boards and limit second-chance opportunities for opponents.

Capela’s offensive game is centered around his ability to finish lobs and score efficiently in the paint, shooting 57.1% from the field. This makes him a valuable asset in pick-and-roll situations with Jalen Brunson. The trade would involve Julius Randle heading to the Hawks, with the Knicks also receiving a 2029 first-round pick. Capela’s defensive capabilities and rebounding would significantly bolster the Knicks’ frontcourt, making them a more well-rounded and formidable team.

6. Walker Kessler

Walker Kessler - New York Knicks

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Walker Kessler, John Collins

Utah Jazz Receive: Julius Randle, Jericho Sims

Walker Kessler has emerged as a promising young center with a strong defensive game and impressive shot-blocking ability. In the 2023-24 season, Kessler averaged 8.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game, showcasing his potential as a defensive anchor. His shot-blocking prowess and ability to alter shots around the rim make him a valuable asset for the Knicks, providing a strong defensive presence in the paint.

Offensively, Kessler is an efficient finisher around the basket, shooting 65.4% from the field. His ability to score in the paint and contribute on the boards would complement the Knicks’ existing roster. The trade involving Julius Randle and Jericho Sims would also bring in John Collins, adding versatility and scoring to the frontcourt. Kessler’s defensive potential and efficient scoring make him an ideal addition for the Knicks, enhancing their lineup and strengthening their title aspirations.
