The 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama was in attendance for the Las Vegas scrimmage between Team USA and Canada. As he spoke to the crowd and greeted the team, he dapped up all the players before shaking hands with the coaches.

This was an unintentional recreation of a sketch by comedic duo Key and Peele, where they depict Obama moving through a crowd while dapping up all the Black people he meets while professionally shaking hands with any white people.
The creators of the sketch are two leading names in entertainment today, with Jordan Peele becoming a star director who made movies such as Get Out, Us, and Nope. Keegan Michael-Key is a successful actor and comic, featured at the 2015 White House Correspondents Dinner, where he served as Barack Obama’s anger translator.
Obama has greeted Team USA before the Olympics in the past as well, with many believing the original Key and Peele sketch was based on how the Former President greeted Team USA before the 2012 London Olympics.
Team USA gave the former president something to cheer for as they beat Canada 86-72 to get their road to the Olympics off to a winning start. Anthony Edwards led the USA in scoring with 13 points off the bench, with Stephen Curry adding 11 points with three made 3-pointers. LeBron James had an all-around performance with seven points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block.
Anthony Davis had a profound two-way impact putting up 10 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, and four blocks. Joel Embiid fouled out in 12 minutes, which led to Davis playing a more pronounced role and Bam Adebayo playing a team-high 21 minutes.
Canada was led by RJ Barrett putting up 12 points and five rebounds while Kelly Olynyk had an ultra-efficient 11 points off the bench. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 10 points on poor efficiency, with a similar tale playing out for Jamal Murray who ended the game with just five points.
Canada will continue their training camp in Blois, France, where they’ll play an exhibition game against France on July 19. Team USA will be headed to Abu Dhabi soon to play in showcase games against Australia and Serbia.
LeBron James Reacts To Meeting Barack Obama
LeBron James was asked about the meeting with the former President, with James reacting glowingly while calling Obama a dear friend of his.
“It’s always a treat to talk to one of the greatest people this world has ever seen, in my opinion. His vision, mindset, and words are always resonating in more ways than one. So, to be able to sit down with a former President, a friend of mine, someone I call a dear friend, it’s really awesome.”

James won his first MVP the year Obama was elected for his first term at the White House (2008). He served two successful terms and will see the second Presidential election since his departure. Meanwhile, James is still representing Team USA at the Olympics.
This is another way to contextualize LeBron’s incredible longevity in the NBA, as he is expected to have more years under his belt, possibly playing through seven Presidential terms over his career.
