Chris Paul spoke recently about the report of NBA referees not liking him as a player. During an interview on The Pat McAfee Show, Paul noted that he thinks many referees feel the way the former NBA referee who was quoted in the article. He joked that the former referee was probably friends with Scott Foster and that he was maybe angry that he didn’t cast him in the latest State Farm commercial.
“I’m going to tell you. It’s probably a lot more that feel like that… That ref, I had to look him up when he said (that). What was his name? He was in the league for a long time and you can probably guess who one of his homeboys is. But it was funny, he was probably made that I ain’t put him in the last State Farm commercial…“
How about that ref that said he hates you

Paul was referencing a recent article about Scott Foster and his beef with CP3, in which one former NBA referee Bill Spooner slammed Paul for his cultivated media personality, and revealed how he is behind the scenes.
“I get asked all the time: ‘Who are some of the tough guys, some of the bad guys?’ And when I tell them that Chris Paul, in my 32 years in the league, was one of the biggest a**holes I ever dealt with, they say, ‘Not Rasheed Wallace … or da-da-da?’ Nope. Nothing like (Paul), And they are like, ‘Oh, he seems like such a nice guy.’ And I say, ‘Yeah, he’s a great image cultivator.’”
Chris Paul And Scott Foster Have One Of The Biggest Beefs In The NBA
Chris Paul and Scott Foster have a long history with each other, with many fans noticing that Paul would regularly lose games officiated by Scott Foster, oftentimes due to dubious calls against Paul’s team. Most recently, this occurred while Paul was playing for the Warriors. Paul’s teammate Stephen Curry publically criticized Foster for ejecting Paul from the game.
Paul spoke after the game about the history between him and Scott Foster. He mentioned that their beef stems from a personal situation that involved Foster disrespecting his son.
“We had a situation some years ago, and it’s personal. The league knows, everybody knows, and it’s been a meeting and all that. It’s a situation with my son and so, yeah. I’m ok with a ref talking, saying whatever, just don’t use a tech to get your point across. It’s been a thing for a while. I ain’t saying nothing to get fined. It is what it is at this point.”
Clearly, the issues between the two are very personal and have been long-running. So the NBA should be careful in the future when pairing the two together. There has been controversy surrounding Foster and other players recently as well, with Rudy Gobert making the money gesture at him during the game to suggest he had been paid off.
With the reputation Foster has in the NBA, it behooves the league not to feed into that by assigning him as a referee for games where Chris Paul plays. But that is a highly unlikely solution, as the league decides on referees quite indiscriminately, without any consideration of context, history, or interpersonal relationships.
