Former NBA player Delonte West, who last played for the Dallas Mavericks in 2012, has found himself in legal trouble again. According to FOX 5 DC West was arrested after collapsing during an on-foot chase with police in Fairfax County, Virginia.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 6, when Fairfax County Police pursued West. He eventually collapsed, and authorities administered Narcan, a medication used to counteract opioid overdoses. West was then taken to a hospital for treatment before being arrested.
The Fairfax County Police Department confirmed that West was charged with violating the conditions of his release and resisting arrest. His mugshot, which surfaced on social media, showed him struggling to keep his eyes open, reflecting his difficult state.
West’s NBA career included stints with several teams, starting with the Boston Celtics in 2004 and concluding with the Dallas Mavericks in 2012. Despite a promising career, which saw him earn over $16 million, West’s post-NBA life has been plagued by personal and legal troubles. After his time in the NBA, he played in the NBA D-League and had a brief tenure with a Chinese team.
West’s struggles with mental health and substance abuse have been well-documented. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban once personally helped West enter a rehab facility in 2020 after he was seen asking for money on the streets of Dallas. Despite showing signs of improvement and even working at the same therapy center he attended, West’s troubles persisted.
In late 2021, West was arrested in Florida for public intoxication, and he attempted a basketball comeback through Ice Cube’s BIG3 league the following year. However, by late 2022, he faced multiple charges, including public intoxication and vehicle trespassing.
West’s recent arrest in Fairfax County is another chapter in his ongoing struggles. His former NBA teammate Jameer Nelson and coach Phil Martelli have expressed their concern and support for West, highlighting the challenges he faces. Nelson emphasized the importance of addressing mental health issues, while Martelli reached out to the basketball community for help.
West’s story is a cautionary tale of the challenges athletes can face after their professional careers end. Despite his on-court success, his post-playing life has been marred by difficulties, underscoring the need for continued support and intervention for athletes dealing with similar issues.
