Luka Doncic spoke after Game 3 about an interaction he had with Kyrie Irving. He noted that during one of the final possessions of the game, he told Irving how tired he was. Irving, the playoff veteran, responded that it is exactly how he should be feeling at the end of such a hard-fought game. Doncic then shared high praise for Irving and what he has brought to the Mavericks.

“Just right now when we were winning by nine, last possession, I told him I’m tired as sh*t. He told me that’s the way it’s supposed to be. He brought a calmness to the team, to me, a maturity and he’s been an unbelievable guy on our team. Learning from him every day, positive energy always. Just a blast having him on our team.”

Luka says he leans on Kyrie’s experience in the post season.

Doncic and Irving have formed quite a connection together on the Mavs. After their Game 3 win, the duo shared a hug with each other, and Kyrie reminded Luka that they were just one game away from winning the Western Conference Finals and going to the NBA Finals.

Doncic and Irving were both fantastic in Game 3. Both players led the game in scoring, scoring 33 points each. Luka especially was a terror for offensive players, securing 5 steals and 1 block to help the Mavericks hold off the Timberwolves.

While there were doubts initially about the pairing of Doncic and Irving, with the Mavericks missing the playoffs after the trade was executed, those doubts were dispelled this year. The Mavericks secured the fifth seed in the West and dominated in the playoffs in a way that he hadn’t seen from them before. It’s clear that the pairing of Luka and Kyrie has worked very well for Dallas.

Can Kyrie Irving And Luka Doncic Win A Championship Together?

Luka Doncic spoke after the game about Kyrie Irving and his importance to their team in the big win. Doncic pointed to Irving’s track record in big-game and late-game situations and gave him his props for delivering when the team needed him most.

“Unbelievable. That’s why they call him, some people, Mr. 4th quarter, right? Just amazing. He scored, what, 33?… It’s amazing. He’s born for this situation. He [was] born for clutch situations. So we just give the ball to him.”

It is refreshing to see Kyrie Irving playing high-level basketball in a team environment where he feels comfortable. After a tumultuous stint in Brooklyn, Irving has returned to his best. Irving recently spoke about the success of his partnership with Luka Doncic, stating that a lot of people are being forced to eat their words after seeing them play.

Doncic and Irving have become the heart and soul of the Mavericks, serving as the two leaders on the court for their team. Whether it be through their performances, or just the overall level of hustle they exhibit on the court, the duo have been setting the tone for the rest of the Mavericks.

With the Mavs now just one win away from going to the NBA Finals, there is cause for excitement, as one of the NBA’s best young players, Luka Doncic looks to secure his place in the history books as an NBA champion. But there is a lot of work left before that can happen, so, he and the Mavericks must remain focused.
