The Dream Team’s legacy extends far beyond the basketball court, shaping the global landscape of the sport and inspiring countless athletes worldwide. Patrick Ewing, reflecting on his experience as part of the historic team, emphasizes the profound impact it had on the international basketball community.

“It was one of the greatest experience of my career, just being around all those guys all those great players and I think everyone took a backseat to each other, cuz you know… we all have our egos, we all think that we’re just as good or better than each other but we all did what we needed to do.”

“I think that if it wasn’t for that Dream Team a lot of the guys that were in the league now from all these other countries. they would have been playing soccer still football.”

“I love the experience, I love playing with those guys, I developed some great friendships you know with with those guys   the jokes and the card games and all the things that that happened our our families uh being around each it was a great experience.” (1:10:50)

Ewing notes the significant role the Dream Team played in encouraging players from other countries to pursue basketball careers instead of opting for soccer. He believes that without the Dream Team’s influence, many current NBA stars from diverse backgrounds might have pursued soccer instead.

Ewing highlights how the Dream Team’s dominance in the 1992 Olympics helped elevate basketball to a global phenomenon, challenging soccer’s status as the preeminent sport worldwide. Their unparalleled skill and larger-than-life personalities captivated audiences around the globe, inspiring aspiring athletes to pursue basketball as their sport of choice.

The Dream Team’s influence is evident in the influx of international talent that followed in the years after their iconic performance. Players like Dirk Nowitzki, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic have not only made their mark in the NBA but have also become basketball ambassadors in their home countries, further fueling the sport’s growth and popularity on a global scale.

For Ewing, his time with the Dream Team remains the pinnacle of his basketball career. Despite his illustrious 17-year career in the NBA, including multiple All-Star appearances and leading the New York Knicks, Ewing considers his stint with the Dream Team as one of the greatest experiences of his life.

Beyond the on-court success, Ewing cherishes the camaraderie and friendships forged during his time with the Dream Team. The bond he shared with his star teammates, both on and off the court, created lasting memories that endure to this day.

As the basketball world continues to evolve, the Dream Team’s legacy remains an indelible part of the sport’s history. Their impact transcends borders and generations, inspiring future athletes to dream big and reach for the highest levels of achievement in basketball.
