USC prospect Bronny James has already captured the attention of the entire basketball world amid his journey to the NBA. According to NBA veteran Patrick Beverley, it has come with an unprecedented amount of pressure to not only play well but live up to the James family name.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. But it comes with being LeBron James’ son… it has nothing to do with play,” said Beverley. “And we can sit here all day and say, let the kid be a kid… but [Bronny James is] literally royalty. So obviously, they gonna go mock draft this, mock daft that, and that’s just what comes with this limelight. This is what his father built, so if anyone can handle it, he can handle it. Shout out to Bronny, man.”
This statement comes after a post by LeBron James himself when he called out the scouts and media networks for lowering Bronny on the draft board. According to James, the professionals need to let the kid be a kid instead of trying to evaluate and judge his potential after every game.
James has since deleted the tweet and fans have been going out of their way to cook the Lakers star for the controversial take. It was LeBron, after all, who declared his mission to play with Bronny in the NBA. It was LeBron who said that his son could “easily” play on the roster right now.
At this point, there is no coming out of the spotlight for Bronny and the moment that he decided to follow in the footsteps of his dad is the moment that the world began to cover his every move. Fortunately, Bronny is more equipped than anyone to handle the pressure but it’s no secret that his NBA potential has fallen under doubt recently after sliding on the draft board.
Uncertain NBA Future For LeBron James Jr.
Bronny James’ cardiac arrest over the summer no doubt interrupted his preparation for the season. After years in Sierra Canyon High School, it’s been a tough adjustment for Bronny at USC and missing months of practice/workouts certainly didn’t help smooth his transition.
So far this season, Bronny is averaging 5.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game on just 37.1% efficiency. In his last five games, James has scored 22 points combined on 49.6% shooting. Meanwhile, the Trojans are one of the worst teams in the Pac-12 this year with a record of just 11-16 (2nd worst in the Conference).
As the son of an NBA legend, Bronny might get drafted on clout alone, especially since he may come as a package deal with his father. For any number of teams looking to potentially add LeBron this summer or beyond, this would be the safest way to lure him into their team.
But as it stands now Bronny may not even crack the first round this year and the latest mock drafts indicate that Bronny may be better off not even going for the league at all until 2025. What that means for LeBron and his NBA future remains to be seen but nothing is a given right now for the James family as they prepare for a major shift in their life.
