Klay Thompson has probably never picked against Stephen Curry in his career, but he is doing it now. Thompson was asked to predict the winner of the much-anticipated three-point contest between Curry and Sabrina Ionescu during All-Star weekend, and he went with the WNBA star.

“I got the Bay Area’s finest,” Thompson said. “Sabrina all day. Since she set a record last year, I think she missed one.”

Thompson was then asked if Ionescu was better than Curry.

“Yeah, oh yeah, all day,” Thompson hilariously replied.

Ionescu, a Bay Area native who was born in Walnut Creek, did set a new NBA and WNBA record for most points in a three-point shooting contest by earning 37 last year. She actually missed two shots, as she made 25 out of 27, which is still ridiculous.

It was after that record-breaking performance that Curry challenged her to a contest, and they will be facing off on Feb. 17 in Indianapolis. It will be the first-ever NBA vs. WNBA three-point contest, and it should be an amazing one.

As for how exactly this will work, Curry will be shooting from the NBA three-point line with NBA balls while Ionescu will be shooting from the WNBA three-point line with WNBA balls. While the 10-time All-Star is the favorite, Thompson is not the only one picking Sabrina.

Kyrie Irving also picked Ionescu over Curry for the three-point contest. He made it clear he has a lot of respect for both, but thinks the New York Liberty star will emerge victorious.

A former teammate of Kyrie’s and Curry’s is backing the Golden State Warriors star, though. Kevin Durant has finally picked Curry to beat Ionescu in the three-point contest. He picked his former teammate, at first, but had then hilariously switched to Ionescu after Curry said Durant was an instigator.

Klay Thompson Would Not Have A Problem Accepting A Smaller Role With The Warriors

Getting back to Thompson, the 2023-24 season has been a rough one for the 34-year-old. He has often cut a frustrated figure, with Klay admitting he was upset about not closing the Warriors’ game against the Nets. He appeared to struggle to accept the fact that he is not the player he once was, but Thompson has now stated he wouldn’t mind a smaller role.

“There’s nothing wrong with that. I’ll be 35 next year. At 35, coming off the ACL and an Achilles [tear] and still have the ability to be a really good player. Maybe not the guy who scored 60 in three quarters and scored an NBA record 37 points in a quarter, but still a great threat out there. I’ve modeled my game after Reggie [Miller] and Ray [Allen], and those guys were incredibly effective until their late 30s. So I plan on kind of following that mold.”

That would definitely be the path for Thompson to follow. The five-time All-Star has averaged just 17.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in this campaign, and has looked like a shell of his former self, for the most part.

There are games where he is able to rediscover that old magic, but those are few and far between. If Thompson just accepts a reserve role in the future, I can see him being a valuable piece for the Warriors, as he would give their offense a huge spark off the bench.
