Paul George is not scheduled to leave the Clippers anytime soon, but it’s no secret that he still holds love for his old team, the Indiana Pacers. In fact, not too long ago, reports indicate that George was fantasizing about a Pacers return and had real interest in potentially teaming up with Tyrese Haliburton.
“They were intrigued, from my understanding, about the idea of playing together,” said Jake Fischer on The Trade Deadline.
The Pacers are still fresh off the deal for Pascal Siakam, so a Paul George pursuit is the last thing on their mind right now. But even now, at 33 years old, George would be a great fit for the Pacers and would have been a great pairing next to Tyrese Haliburton. Unfortunately for Pacers fans, it just wasn’t in the cards and they’ll have to live with their current squad as Paul George and the Clippers continue their reign in the West.
Paul George Is A Pacers Legend
Before Paul George joined the Clippers or the Thunder, he was a member of the Pacers. It was in Indiana that his career first began and it was there that he became a star. In seven seasons with the team, he averaged 18.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game on 43.5% shooting. By the time made his first All-Star team in 2013, George was widely considered one of the best two-way wings in the game. During the height of his run, he took the Pacers toe-to-toe against LeBron James and the Miami Heat big three, giving them some a real fight in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
While Paul did not depart on the best of terms from Indiana, he will always share a special connection to the franchise and the city thanks to all the years he spent there growing as a leader and developing his game. As a potential free agent his upcoming summer, Paul George could potentially make a return to the Pacers and sign on to join Haliburton for himself. Currently, though, it’s considered a longshot given how his tenure with the Clippers is playing out.
Pacers Are On The Rise
A Paul George and Tyrese Haliburton duo would have been amazing to see but the Pacers are in no position to complain about their current situation. At 23-17 this season, they look like a lock to secure a playoff spot in the East and are brimming with young talent that will keep them competitive for years to come. The most impressive of these talented young players is star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who is in the middle of the best stretch of his career with averages of 23.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 12.5 assists per game on 49.7% shooting.
All of that is not to mention the addition of Pascal Siakamn, a two-way wing player who will bolster the frontcourt and add much-needed defense to the rotation. His presence could help unlock a new level of this Pacers team and it will be interesting to see how far they can go. But if things don’t work out in Los Angeles, Paul George could end up as the consultation prize for the Pacers next summer and he could be the final piece they need to truly compete for a title.
