Speaking on the ‘Nightcap’ podcast with Shannon Sharpe, veteran NBA point guard Gilbert Arenas explained why he doesn’t trust the Los Angeles Clippers. Comparing them to a “hooker playing housewife,” Arenas claimed that the Clips were the “hoes” of the league and that nobody realistically pictures them winning it all.
“Can a hooker be a housewife? The answer is yes but have they? It’s the Clippers,” said Arenas. “They are the hoes of the NBA. We don’t see them becoming trophy wives anytime soon.”

The Clippers have experienced some pretty brutal losses over the past few years and they have yet to make the finals with their current regime. This season, at 26-14, Los Angeles is looking better than ever and there is some real noise about them potentially making a run. But thanks to a rather ugly history of losing and bad luck, there are still some (like Arenas) who just don’t trust the Clippers to step up when it counts the most.
Decades Of Darkness For The Clippers
Unlike what we see today from the Clippers franchise, they were a laughingstock of the league for most of their franchise’s history. Before the era of the “Lob City Clippers” in the mid-2010s, the franchise had nothing to show for its existence and had very few accomplishments to look back on. Compare this to the glitz and glamour of the Lakers, and it’s easy to understand why the franchise was an afterthought for so long.
But even during the Lob City days, when they were winning a lot of games, things never quite worked out for the Clippers. Whether it was injuries, team collapses, or being pinned against a dynasty, there was always something in the way for the Clippers and they never made a meaningful run in the spring. When Paul George and Kawhi Leonard arrived in 2019, fans thought it would change everything for the franchise… but it’s been more of the same. In four years together, Kawhi and George have yet to make the NBA Finals and there is doubt they can get there this season given their long history of failure.
Promising Signs In Los Angeles
No matter your opinions on the Clippers, their recent play demands that they be taken seriously in the West. After a slow start, they’ve hit an impressive stride, going 8-2 in their last 10 games en route to securing a top-four seed. Leading the charge has been Kawhi Leonard, a 2x Finals MVP who is the best two-way player in the game. There’s also his sidekick and main co-star, Paul George, who is averaging 23.9 points per game on a career-high 46.8% shooting.
Arguably the biggest x-factor of this Clippers team is James Harden, who brings playmaking, ball handling, and perimeter shooting around the two wing stars. His skills have unlocked a different version of the Clippers and we’re seeing how lethal they can be. Going forward, the only thing left for the Clippers to do is to break the cycle of losing and finally advance to the final round of the postseason. Until they pull that off, there will always be doubts about how they stack up against the rest of the West.
