The Miami Heat have extended Erik Spoelstra’s contract with the franchise, handing the longtime head coach a massive eight-year extension worth around $120 million. This is comfortably the biggest contract an NBA coach has ever received, but Spoelstra has earned it by establishing the Heat as a perennial Finals threat in the last five seasons.

Spoelstra has coached the Heat since the 2008-09 season and brought the franchise two championships and five NBA Finals appearances. He’s missed the playoffs three times since joining the team. He has an overall record of 725-506 with the Heat, and will marshall the franchise till 2032.
Up until now, the three highest-paid coaches in the NBA this season were all leading under .500 franchises. Monty Williams signed a $72 million contract to coach the Pistons and it’s instantly blown up in his face, with their current record being 3-33.
The second-worst team in the NBA is the Spurs, coached by legend Gregg Popovich, who signed a contract extension in the summer worth more than Monty’s contract.
Finally, four-time champion Steve Kerr is having his worst season as Warriors head coach, sitting with a 17-19 record so far this season.
LeBron James Almost Got Erik Spoelstra Fired In 2010
Erik Spoelstra is the most successful coach in Miami Heat history, even surpassing the records Pat Riley set with the franchise. However, Spoelstra didn’t get off to the perfect start, especially when he was put in charge of the Heat superteam with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
Spoelstra’s Heat tenure could’ve ended when ‘The Heatles’ were put together, as Pat Riley had revealed that LeBron tried getting Spoelstra fired to have Riley return as coach after the first 17 games of his first season in Miami.
“They just said, ‘We’re not feeling it,’ or something like that. We talked about the typical things that we have to do, have patience, and all of that stuff.”And I remember LeBron looking at me, and he said, ‘Don’t you ever get the itch?’ I said, ‘The itch for what?’ He said, ‘The itch to coach again?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t have the itch.’ He didn’t ask any more questions, and I didn’t offer any more answers. But I know what it meant, and I always go back and wonder about what he was thinking at that time. He walked out scratching his leg like it was itching.”
Not firing Spoelstra turned out to be the best decision Riley ever made for the franchise. He would turn the Heat season around before falling victim to the 2011 Mavericks in the NBA Finals. He followed that up with a dominant title win in 2012 and the second-longest winning streak (27 wins) in NBA history in the 2012-13 season before winning another title.
Spoelstra has made the Finals three more times since and has failed to bring another title to Miami. The appearances themselves are overachievements as the Heat haven’t had a team people pick to win a title since LeBron left in 2014. Hopefully, Spoelstra will continue dominating as a coach and bring more success to Miami.
