Victor Wembanyama Takes A Major Shot At Las Vegas: “The Closest Thing On Earth To A Dystopia…”

Wembanyama is not a fan of Las Vegas.

LeBron James has taken a special interest in Las Vegas, and even the NBA itself has increased its presence in the area. But if you ask Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama about “Sin City,” he’ll tell you how much he detests the “dystopian” landscape despite its reputation for being a hub of earthy pleasures.

“To me, on earth, it’s probably the closest thing to a dystopia,” said the French star.

Victor has only been to Las Vegas a few times in his career, but he’s seen enough to know that he never wants to go back. Fortunately, he won’t have to worry about showing up again this season since the in-season tournament is over but the city itself is likely to have a much bigger presence in the NBA.

With a population of over 640,000 people, Las Vegas is a growing metropolis in the Nevadan desert. Known for its gambling, shows, and scorching heat, Las Vegas has a very special and unique vibe about it. Up until a few years ago, the city didn’t have a single sports team but now they’ve got two with the Vegas Raiders and Golden Knights. The NBA could be next up on the list, but Wembanyama won’t be heading there either way.

Next NBA Expansion City

As the NBA continues to grow as an international attraction, the prospect of adding additional teams has become a real possibility. Potential expansion candidates include Seattle, Vancouver, and Mexico City among others. Of course, Las Vegas is probably the city next up in line for NBA representation. Besides a strong market in the area, the NBA already has experience working there thanks to the in-season tournament finals, which took place live in T-Mobile Arena.

The most interesting aspect of a potential Vegas team is that LeBron James himself is angling to become the owner. It’s no secret that James has big plans when he retires and owning his own franchise in Vegas has long been a dream of his. Unfortunately, Wembanyama does not share this same passion for the city and he’s more likely to stay with the Spurs than go anywhere near Sin City.

Wemby A Spur For Life?

Victor Wembanayama has to be one of the few athletes who hates Las Vegas, but it speaks volumes about his personality and what kind of activity he gets into during the off days. Clearly, Wemby isn’t about hitting the casinos or partying late into the night. Instead, he’d rather take it easy by himself or go for some wine at the nearest restaurant. Really, he’s the perfect player for the San Antonio Spurs, a franchise that has historically been all about business.

This season, at 5-25, the Spurs are clearly not making any waves in the Western Conference but the hope is that, with Wemby’s commitment and leadership, they can build something special that is remembered for generations. For now, both Victor and his team still have a long way to go and a whole lot more to prove but if he sticks around and sees this though, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t expect better days ahead.
