On the cusp of his return to Chase Center, former Warriors guard Jordan Poole recently opened up on his tenure with Stephen Curry and the crew. Despite how it ended, Poole said he’s thankful for his time there given all that he gained in four seasons.
“Successful time,” Poole said, via The Athletic. “Learned a lot. Can’t ask for too much more than that. Won a championship. Played with Loon. Played with some of the greatest ever. Played with (Andrew Wiggins). Met great guys. The staff is good. It was a cool experience. It was just dope to accomplish something you’ve been looking for your entire life, winning a championship at the highest level, seeing what that takes.”
Poole rose to stardom as a Warrior and cemented himself as a franchise cornerstone after his play in 2022 helped the team capture their seventh NBA championship. Coming back as a Washington Wizard now must be surreal for the young sharpshooter considering all that has changed in his new situation.
An Ugly Breakup Between Poole And The Warriors
Jordan Poole averaged 18.5 points per game on 44-36-92 shooting splits during the 2021-22 campaign. With Poole as their third-best player, the Warriors finished third in the West that season with 53 total wins en route to an impressive title run. But once the championship celebrations began to wind down, and it was time for Poole to get back to work, problems began to arise.
The first sign of trouble was before the next season began. In an infamous video that leaked to social media, Draymond Green was captured punching Poole and knocking him out during a team practice. The Warriors tried to downplay the altercation, but things were never the same for them again, and Poole’s morale took a massive hit that drove a permanent wedge between him and his teammate. At the conclusion of a turbulent 2022-23 postseason, the Warriors finally pulled the plug on Poole and traded him to the Wizards in exchange for veteran point guard Chris Paul.
A Rude Awakening For Jordan Poole
Moving from Southern California to Washington D.C. is never a decision made by choice, but Jordan Poole came into it hoping to make the best of the situation. Unfortunately for Poole, things haven’t really panned out so far. In 25 games as a Wizard, Jordan’s stats are down across the board with averages of 17.4 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game on 41% shooting.
The worst part of his transition has been the Wizards’ performance as a team so far. With nobody but Poole and Kuzma to lead, the Wizards have struggled to win games and are just 4-22 through the first quarter of the season. Tonight, Poole will get his first glimpse at his former team since being traded and the world will be watching to see how he handles it. With a real opportunity to send a message and make a statement against the team that traded him, expect an explosive game from Jordan Poole tonight and the Warriors will have to look to contain him from the jump.
