- Anthony Edwards says Kerr’s coaching made him a ‘madman’ in the gym
Anthony Edwards is one of the NBA’s biggest superstars. The Minnesota Timberwolves man took another step in his development with Team USA this season. And he recently credited Steve Kerr for it.
Anthony Edwards was coached by the Golden State Warriors Head Coach during his time at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and he told ESPN how Steve Kerr openly challenged him to get better.
“I thought I was working hard,” Edwards said at Timberwolves media day on Thursday. “When he came, I was going through drills and he kept stopping them, like, ‘That’s all you got? That’s all you got?’ And I’m like, ‘Bruh, I’m going hard as you want me to go. What you want me to do? I’m sweating crazy.'”
Edwards added, “Me and my trainer riding home after dinner and we’re just talking like we got to pick it up,” Edwards said. “I don’t know how and I don’t know what we got to do, but we got to pick it up. After that. I became a madman at the gym.”
Anthony Edwards averaged 24.8 points per game for the Wolves last season. But he can still get much better, and if Steve Kerr mildly taunting him is what it takes, then he will be more than happy to do it.
Steve Kerr Compared Anthony Edwards’ Training Regimen To Stephen Curry And Warriors Stars
Steve Kerr has been blessed with incredible players like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant during his time with the Golden State Warriors. This has led to four NBA championships.
The stars themselves have revealed how hard they work, with Stephen Curry’s workouts being the stuff of legend and even leading to other players throwing up while trying to keep up. And Edwards revealed that Kerr used that while talking to him.
“He’s like, ‘Man, you’ve got to see Steph [Curry], KD and Klay [Thompson] work out,” Edwards said. “They still was continuously telling me, ‘You didn’t work hard enough. If we had the No. 1 pick, we wouldn’t take you.’ And I was just like, ‘Damn, that’s crazy.'”
This is an insane motivational tactic and it might not have worked with other NBA stars. But Anthony Edwards has the elite mentality of only wanting to improve his game, so this is surely going to unlock him even further.
Steve Kerr Had Massive Praise For Anthony Edwards During His Time With Team USA
This is a testament to Steve Kerr’s respect for Anthony Edwards that he would compare him to legends of the game like Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry.
And during Edwards’ time with Team USA, Steve Kerr gave a lot of props to the Timberwolves’ star directly as well.
“He’s unquestionably the guy,” Kerr said. “You can see he knows it. But now the team knows it, and I think the fans see it.
“He genuinely believes he’s the best player in the gym every single night. And he’s such a dynamic young player. I think he’s taking a leap.”
Anthony Edwards is on the path to becoming one of the NBA’s best players. He is just 22 years old and has years ahead of him to reach the MVP level. It would be ironic if Steve Kerr helped him unlock the level that allowed him to start a new era in the Western Conference.
