  • Serbian superstars Nikola Jokic and Novak Djokovic have dominated in 2023
  • Jokic won the NBA championship and Finals MVP with the Nuggets
  • Djokovic is the No. 1 ranked tennis player and won three of the four Grand Slams this year

For a small European country with just over six million people, Serbia punches well above their weight when it comes to sports. At present, they have the best basketball player in the world, Nikola Jokic, and the best tennis player, Novak Djokovic.

Both men have dominated in their respective sports in 2023. Jokic finally won his first NBA championship this year and did so in some fashion. He averaged 30.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game in the NBA playoffs.

It was one of the greatest postseason runs we have ever seen and firmly established the Denver Nuggets star as the best basketball player in the world. The biggest knock on Jokic, despite winning back-to-back MVPs in 2021 and 2022, was that he hadn’t gotten it done in the playoffs, and he now put that talk to bed.

As for Djokovic, he is not just the best tennis player in the world but simply the greatest of all time. This year, he won the Australian Open, and the French Open, and then on Sunday, he won the US Open, beating Daniil Medvedev 6-3 7-6 6-3. Djokovic now has 24 Grand Slams to his name, the most in the history of men’s tennis.

Novak Djokovic Paid Tribute To Kobe Bryant After Winning The US Open

The fourth grand slam of the year wasn’t the only thing that Novak won on Sunday, as he won a lot of hearts, too. Djokovic stole the show at the US Open with an amazing Kobe Bryant tribute.

He wore a “Mamba Forever” t-shirt and stated that Bryant was a close friend who helped him a lot when he was struggling with injuries. Kobe was someone who Djokovic relied on, and he was devastated after the Lakers icon tragically passed away.

Djokovic had credited Bryant and Mamba Mentality after winning the French Open as well. It is clear that Kobe had a big impact on the 36-year-old, and the Serb will always cherish their interactions.

Djokovic Called Jokic The Pride Of Serbia

Djokovic might just be the most popular man in Serbia today and is truly one of the greatest sportsmen ever. He and Jokic have built up somewhat of a friendship in recent times, and he had some high praise for the Nuggets star earlier this year.

Djokovic called Jokic the best player in the world and the pride of Serbia. He was hoping that the 28-year-old would win his first NBA championship this year and, of course, he did.

At this point, there is no reason to believe that these two wouldn’t be at the top in 2024, either. Jokic and the Nuggets have a great chance at repeating, while Djokovic keeps showing that he is the man to beat in men’s tennis.

His passion for the sport was ignited after witnessing the high-octane offense of the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns. Among the Suns, Shawn Marion stood out to Gautam as an all-time underrated NBA player. Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely. He admired Marion’s finishing ability at the rim and his shooting, despite an unconventional jump shot, believing that Marion’s skill set would have been even more appreciated in today’s NBA.This transformative experience not only deepened his love for basketball but also shaped his approach to sports writing, enabling him to connect with readers through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis.
