  • The Atlanta Hawks get a third star in DeMar DeRozan
  • The Dallas Mavericks get a good defensive center
  • The Chicago Bulls get a trade package for their rebuild

The Dallas Mavericks and the Atlanta Hawks are both teams that are aiming to be better next season. The Hawks were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the first round, while the Mavericks missed the playoffs entirely. Both squads have All-NBA players in Luka Doncic and Trae Young, and it is imperative for both to try and improve their rosters ahead of next season.

Perhaps a multi-team trade is the solution to the quandary that both teams are facing right now. This trade framework involves the Chicago Bulls joining the Dallas Mavericks and the Atlanta Hawks to do a deal that involves DeMar DeRozan going to the Hawks and Clint Capela going to the Mavericks.

Atlanta Hawks Receive: DeMar DeRozan

Dallas Mavericks Receive: Clint Capela

Chicago Bulls Receive: Christian Wood (Sign-And-Trade), Patty Mills, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, 2028 Second-Round Pick (MIA via DAL), 2030 Second-Round Pick (ATL)

This could potentially be a good deal for all three teams involved. The Mavericks and the Hawks would clearly be better, while the Bulls would get assets and players that can help them be a better team in the future. Here is why all three teams should consider making this deal.

The Atlanta Hawks Get A Shot Creating Forward

The Atlanta Hawks are clearly missing something that is preventing them from competing at the highest level. Perhaps getting another star is the answer for the franchise, and adding more talent generally helps most teams. DeMar DeRozan is a low-risk, high-reward acquisition, and he could definitely thrive as the No. 2 or No. 3 option on the Hawks.

This past season with the Chicago Bulls, DeMar DeRozan averaged 24.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, while shooting 50.4% from the field. He would slot in as the starting SF for the team and would give them the midrange wing scorer that they have been lacking. A player with size who can create his own shot in the midrange is precisely what the Hawks need, and DeRozan’s veteran presence will be helpful on the squad as well.

Though losing Clint Capela would hurt the Atlanta Hawks, young center Onyeka Okongwu could play a similar role for the franchise. Moving on from Capela and getting a star in return would definitely be the right move for the Atlanta Hawks, and Could take them to the next level as a franchise.

The risk here of course is that DeMar DeRozan could leave the Hawks at the end of the 2023-24 season. However, if the team is competitive, it is quite possible that DeRozan will stay, and even if the team doesn’t do as well as they hoped, the Hawks wouldn’t be risking a lot of assets.

The Dallas Mavericks Land A Defensive Center

One of the issues for the Dallas Mavericks ahead of this season is their lack of a defensive center. Though Dereck Lively was good in college, it is unlikely that he is ready for a full-time starting role with the team. The Dallas Mavericks have long coveted Clint Capela, and this deal would see them finally land the big man.

Last season, Clint Capela averaged 12.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, while shooting 65.3% from the field. He is the perfect center to pair with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving: he can protect the rim, catch lobs on offense, and rebound at a high level. The key to thriving next to ball-dominant stars is not doing too much, and there is no doubt that Capela could thrive with the Mavericks.

In this trade scenario, all the Dallas Mavericks would have to do is facilitate a Christian Wood sign-and-trade to the Chicago Bulls, and give up Olivier-Maxence Prosper and a second-round pick. That is a low price to pay for a starting-caliber center, and if this deal were available, they would absolutely do it.

The Chicago Bulls Get A Solid Trade For An Expiring Contract

For the Chicago Bulls, now might be the time to trade DeMar DeRozan. He is on an expiring $28.6 million deal and could end up leaving the team in 2024 free agency. If the Bulls decide to put him on the trade market however, DeMar DeRozan could still have value to a squad that is desperate for a difference-maker, like the Atlanta Hawks. This deal would allow the Bulls to at least get something in return for the veteran star.

The key player that the Chicago Bulls would land in this deal is Christian Wood, who is a sharpshooting big man who is gifted on the offensive side of the ball. Last season with the Dallas Mavericks, Wood averaged 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 37.6% from deep. There is no doubt that he could be a solid acquisition for the Bulls, and the Bulls were notably viewed as a potential threat to land the big man.

The future assets that the Chicago Bulls would get in this deal involve prospect Olivier-Maxence Prosper and the two second-round picks. Prosper has shown that he can be a good defender in college, and he definitely has the size to guard multiple positions. Though his offensive game clearly needs work, he would get plenty of opportunities on the Chicago Bulls. The second-round picks in this deal are obviously meant as the draft compensation required.

Overall, this deal gets the Chicago Bulls a quality veteran, a prospect, and some picks for the future. This is a good return for a veteran star on an expiring contract and this would definitely help them moving forward.

This Could Be A Good Trade For All Three Teams

With this three-team trade, the Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks would both get quality contributors who can be difference-makers for them. Adding veteran players who are still elite is important for any contending team, and that is what both would be doing here. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls would be moving DeMar DeRozan and kick-starting a long-awaited rebuild.

It remains to be seen if the three teams can come together on a trade with this framework. This could be a solid deal for all franchises involved, and we’ll see what ends up happening in the future.
