Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards still has a lot to prove as a 22-year-old youngster with just a few years of experience in the league. Even so, he has managed to exceed expectations in his short career so far and has even earned the title as the “top dog” for Team USA in this year’s FIBA World Cup.

Yet, despite all the pressure that typically comes with such a role, Anthony Edwards says he’s feeling completely in control as Team USA heads for the gold.

“Pressure? Nah, none at all,” said Edwards as head coach Steve Kerr smirked from his side. “I love the game of basketball, it’s fun for me man and I go out there and do what I love. I put in the work every day, so it’s no pressure.”

Edwards was always considered a highly talented scorer, which is why the Timberwolves picked him up with the first pick in 2020. In the seasons that followed, Edwards improved in each statistical category until the 2022-23 campaign, when he finished with 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game on 45% shooting.

With Team USA, Edwards is putting up a team-high 19.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and a team-high 2.0 steals in five games played so far.

As Steve Kerr put it a few weeks ago, Edwards is “the guy” for this group and their leader both on and off the court. At this point, no matter where the USA finishes in the World Cup, Edwards has earned the attention and respect of his peers.

Is Edwards The NBA’s Next Big Thing?

With stars like Ja Morant, Zion Williamson, and others in a state of uncertainty right now, there’s a void to fill at the top and Anthony Edwards is seemingly happy to fill it.

Besides having incredible talent, Edwards has the kind of fearless ambition that every fan looks for in the best of the best.

This upcoming season will be his biggest test of all. As great as this stint with Team USA has been for him, the jury is still out on whether he can bring the same degree of success to the Timberwolves without the help of superstar talent.
