- Shaquille O’Neal shared clips of him facing Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan
- O’Neal scored on both all-time greats with relative ease
- O’Neal says today’s players are lucky he isn’t playing now
Shaquille O’Neal says today’s NBA players are rather fortunate that they don’t have to go up against him. The 51-year-old shared a video that featured iconic clips of him scoring against Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan to show how good he really was.
“Y’all lucky I’m not playing in this era.”
O’Neal is remembered as the most dominant physical force in the modern NBA, but there was more to his game than just that. Shaq certainly had a lot of skill, and O’Neal cooking Jordan using that Dream Shake before the 1996 All-Star Game remains iconic to this day. That clip of him brilliantly scoring against Isiah, meanwhile, comes from practice before the 1993 All-Star game.
Today’s players are certainly a bit fortunate that he isn’t playing now. Shaq averaged 23.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.6 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game during his career, and he put up those numbers while going up against some of the great big men in NBA history.
There just aren’t enough of them in today’s game, and the four-time NBA champion would have dominated on most nights. Shaq’s combination of size and skill would have just overwhelmed most of his opponents.
Shaquille O’Neal Stated He Could Play In Any Era
Shaq has had to hear for a while now about how he couldn’t play in today’s NBA because he wasn’t a great shooter or ball-handler. This post here is actually the second one that the 2000 MVP has made recently to show that it isn’t the case. O’Neal shared a video to show that he could play in any era, and it had him scoring in different ways on Scottie Pippen during practice with Team USA in 1996.
The truly great players would have excelled in any era, and Shaq is certainly one of them. Had he played in today’s NBA, he’d have focused a bit more on improving the other aspects of his game. If Shaq could have become just a competent shooter and ball-handler, that’d have been more than enough for him to be an unstoppable force in the game today.
