- Mike Singer was one of the media members who voted for Jaylen Brown as an All-NBA player last season
- Brown thanked Singer by sending him a note to show his appreciation
- Brown made the All-NBA Second Team for the first time in his career in 2023
Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown wanted to show his appreciation to those in the media who voted him as an All-NBA player last season. The Denver Post’s Mike Singer was one of them, and Singer shared a picture of the note that Brown had sent to him to thank him for his vote.
“I wanted to thank you for your All-NBA vote this past season,” Brown stated in the note. “I recognize the power and weight of the current system of All-NBA voting and the impact it has on players like me in the current NBA.
“I also recognize that it is not something any journalists like yourself signed up for,” Brown continued. “Nonetheless, I know you took the time to consider worthy candidates and appreciate your vote. Wishing you and your family all the best this upcoming off-season and thank you again.”
Classy note arrived today from @FCHWPO @JGlushon.
No media member asked for their vote to carry enormous weight re. All-NBA. Cool of him to acknowledge that. pic.twitter.com/0FOVCWmnvC

It was indeed a very classy gesture. Making one of the All-NBA teams has always been a big deal for NBA players, and more so now, with the stakes involved. Being voted into the All-NBA Second Team this past season meant that Brown was eligible for the Supermax extension.
It was only because the likes of Singer voted for him, that Brown signed the richest contract in NBA history worth $304 million over five years. This system of the media influencing the kind of contract that players can get has been criticized, but you don’t see too many other good alternatives to create a criterion for a Supermax extension.

Rick Barry Criticized The Celtics For Handing Jaylen Brown This Massive Contract
While Brown is understandably thrilled over his massive payday, there are many who believe the Celtics made a mistake here. The 26-year-old Brown averaged 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game in the 2022-23 season, but the deal has been viewed as a huge overpay.
NBA legend Rick Barry called out the Celtics for giving Brown this deal as he pointed to the forward’s poor play in the playoffs. Barry couldn’t believe that a player who averages around 18.5 points per game in the postseason could get that contract.
To be fair to Brown, he has averaged over 20.0 points per game in each of his last three postseasons. He has, however, been criticized for being rather inconsistent, and with this new deal, the pressure on the two-time All-Star to deliver in the playoffs is only going up.
