Rick Barry Calls Out Boston Celtics For Signing Jaylen Brown To A $306 Million Contract: “His Average For Playoffs For Them Is 18.5 Points A Game”

  • Jaylen Brown signed the richest contract extension in NBA history, where he’ll make $306 million over five years
  • NBA legend Rick Barry doesn’t think Brown deserves that contract because of his struggles in the playoffs
  • Brown has averaged 18.2 points per game for the Celtics in his playoff career

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown made headlines after signing a five-year supermax contract extension worth $306 million earlier in the summer. It’s the richest contract extension in NBA history.

Former NBA star Rick Barry believes the Celtics are massively overpaying the 26-year-old. Barry backed up his statement by pointing out Brown’s meager scoring average in the playoffs.

“You look at some of the contracts they have, like Brown—$ 306 million. I mean, that’s just hard for me to believe,” Barry told Joy De’Angela. “You know what his average in the playoffs for them is 18.5 points a game. I mean, 18.5 points a game, and he’s going to make $69 million in the last year of his contract. But 18.5 points a game, that’s nothing! Seriously.”

Barry added: “To pay somebody that kind of money, and he’s a nice player, I really like him, but man, he’s got to improve his game. He turns the ball over too much, he tries to force things, and so is his teammate Tatum. That’s one of the reasons they lost to the Warriors two seasons ago. They make too many turnovers.”

For reference, Jaylen Brown has averaged 18.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 47.9% from the field and 36.2% from the field. Moreover, he averages 2.2 turnovers per game.

Now, Brown’s stats are not that bad. But for a player who will be making more than $65 million in the final season of his contract, there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement in Brown’s game.

Rick Barry Previously Called Out Jaylen Brown And Jayson Tatum

The duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown failed to lead the Boston Celtics past the Miami Heat during the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics were eliminated in seven games as they lost 4-3.

Warriors legend Rick Barry had a theory about why the duo failed. Barry believes that they suffer from ‘Russell Westbrook Syndrome.‘

“Both Brown and Tatum, who are two talented players, suffer from what I call Westbrook syndrome,” Barry said. “Westbrook is an incredible talent. I love how hard he plays, but he tries to force things. In the game of basketball, you should always be taking what the defense gives you. Both Jaylen and Jayson, they have a tendency to force things and end up getting a lot of turnovers.”

Tatum and Brown have only led the Celtics to one NBA Finals appearance in six trips to the playoffs since their time together. Even during the 2022 NBA Finals, the Celtics were defeated 4-2 by the Warriors.

Can the duo finally get over the hump in the 2023-24 season? They certainly have the talent on their roster to do so. After all, the Celtics added another All-Star caliber player in Kristaps Porzingis to the team ahead of the new season.
