  • Anthony Davis signed a 3-year extension with the Lakers this summer
  • LeBron James is entering the final two years of his contract
  • Executive believes Lakers co-stars are setting up to stay together

It’s been an up-and-down tenure for LeBron James in Los Angeles, but it’s hard not to call his run with the Lakers a success, given all that he’s managed to accomplish. Even so, talks about the end have become more frequent in recent years, and it seems like the Lakers really need to start focusing on their post-LeBron future if they want to avoid falling behind.

Meanwhile, LeBron himself has been talking about potentially leaving the Lakers to either link up with his son, Bronny, or perhaps into retirement to spend much-earned time with his family. But, for now, Antyhony Davis’ new contract may have just paved the way for King James to finish out his career with the Purple and Gold.

“You sign AD to this deal, there is the Klutch connection there, and LeBron has a certain level of responsibility for what Davis does with the Lakers…. if LeBron was going to leave, that would change the conversation,” a league executive told Heavy Sports. “Now, AD can change his mind if LeBron leaves the Lakers down the road and ask for a trade, but the message to LeBron is that they want him there, and AD signing that is a message, too. It paves the way for these two guys to stay together for the foreseeable.”

Davis is still in the early stages of signing a massive 3-year, $186 million extension with the Lakers, but now that he’s committed through 2028, it puts the Lakers in a position to build around him moving forward.

Anthony Davis Needs To Lead The Lakers

No matter how much longer LeBorn sticks around, his days of carrying teams to titles are over. Nowadays, while he’s still a superior superstar talent, his age and declining durability make him incapable of carrying the burden of being a number one option.

The key to success in Los Angeles is Anthony Davis, and if he can stay healthy then it could vault the Lakers back into the Finals. Either way, with so much uncertainty around the franchise lately, it’s got to be of some relief for Lakers fans knowing that the team has a future beyond LeBron James.
