  • Tyler Herro has found his name in trade rumors all offseason
  • Udonis Haslem has been in touch with Herro and is checking up on his mental health
  • Haslem believes Herro can be very proud of his time with the Heat

It is never an easy time for a player when their name is constantly thrown around in trade talks and that just so happens to be the case for Tyler Herro. The 23-year-old guard seems to be the most likely candidate to be on his way out should the Miami Heat succeed in their pursuit of Damian Lillard.

As Herro faces an uncertain future, his former teammate Udonis Haslem has been checking up on him. Haslem revealed he has been in contact with the 2022 Sixth Man of the Year, with their conversations being about Herro’s tenure with the team.

“I’m just sitting around watching like everybody else,” Haslem said of the Lillard rumors. “Obviously, I have a relationship with Tyler, so I keep in touch with him, I talk to him, I check on his mental.”

“One thing I told Tyler and the one thing we focus on is the time spent here,” Haslem said about their conversations. “It’s amazing, so whatever happens, he can walk away with his head up. Sixth Man of the Year, two NBA Finals, three Eastern Conference finals.

“His 4 to 5 years here has been equivalent or better than people’s most careers,” Haslem continued. “He has nothing to be ashamed about, he hold his head high. He handled his business. If that happens and the trade goes through, he goes somewhere else and continues to build and grow, and get more money and get better as a player.”

"Whatever happens, he can walk away with his head up. 6MOY, 2 NBA Finals, 3 ECF. His 4-5 years here has been equivalent or better than most people's careers. He has nothing to be ashamed about."

Herro certainly has nothing to be ashamed of. He proved to be a solid contributor right on arrival as the 13th pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, as he helped the Heat get to the NBA Finals in 2020. His game has also progressed significantly over the years and this past season, he averaged 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game.

Herro unfortunately wasn’t able to play much of a role as the Heat made the Finals this past season, as he broke two fingers on his shooting hand in their first playoff game. He missed the rest of the postseason and had he been healthy, he certainly could have helped Miami put up a better fight against the Denver Nuggets.

The Heat Could Land Damian Lillard Without Parting With Tyler Herro

It was reported last month that Herro believes he will be traded but it appears there is a way for the Heat to keep him and still land Lillard. It would, however, require them to give up five players, including Caleb Martin, Jamie Jacquez Jr., and Kyle Lowry, to go with significant draft capital.

The Heat certainly would be quite the formidable team if they could trot out Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Damian Lillard, and Tyler Herro. They have fallen just short in their quest to win a title in recent seasons but if they can pull this off, you’d fancy their chances at finally getting over the line.
