- Bam Adebayo speaks to BWB Africa players as coach
- Adebayo explains what makes Heat different from other teams.
- Accountability and standards are important for team culture
After making a shocking run to the NBA finals this year, it became clear that the Miami Heat are a cut above the average team. While the powers of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo are to blame for their recent success, one can also point to the world-renowned Heat culture as part of the story.
For years, the Heat have been described as a brilliant organization from top to bottom and it’s why they’ve been able to outperform expectations year after year. According to Bam, the whole thing is about upholding a certain standard.
“I can answer that question in one word: standard. Both your questions [can be answered with] ‘standard’. Miami Heat have a standard; we uphold that standard. We look forward to being held accountable to that standard,” said Bam via ESPN. “That means winning games and being able to raise that trophy at the end of the season. Coming here, it’s the same thing – it’s just standard. We (Adebayo’s team in the BWB Africa Games) want to win every game; we’re going to play it all and we’re going to leave it all on the court.”

Head coach Erik Spoelstra does a great job holding every member of his team accountable. Every player from the top stars to the last man off the bench gives their all on the floor and that energy is what helped carry them to wins over really solid opponents.
This ‘Heat culture’ is also what attracted Damian Lillard to the team, although it remains to be seen if Pat Riley can pull off a deal to make a trade happen.
Dame’s Relationship With Bam Is A Huge Attracting Force To Miami
As the Heat negotiate to pull Lillard away from Portland, Lillard and his camp are doing everything they can to force Joe Cronin’s hand and play nice with the Heat. For now, Cronin has not budged on his stance, but neither has Dame, whose commitment to the Heat has only grown stronger thanks, in part, to the presence of Bam.
“He’s made up his mind, this is what he wants,” league insider Tim Reynolds said on Saturday Sports World with Marc Stein. “There’s a billion reasons why. The connection he had with Bam Adebayo I think is a really understated story right now in this whole deal. They connected incredibly at the Tokyo Olympics. You could see bonds being formed. They’ve stayed close.”
Only time will tell how this all ends for Dame, but there is no question that Miami is still the most likely landing spot for the disgruntled point guard. But after watching all that they accomplished this past season, can you really blame him for wanting to be a part of it?
