The first-ever $300 million contract in the NBA has been signed as Jaylen Brown has agreed on a five-year, $304 million extension to remain with the Boston Celtics.
The contract will start with the 2024-25 season and will have a 10% trade kicker, meaning any acquiring team will have to match salaries out of their noses to get Brown. There isn’t a player option to opt out of the deal in the final year.

Brown averaged 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists last season and earned a spot on the All-NBA team, which made him eligible for this supermax contract. The Celtics swingman has been linked with a move away from the franchise previously, but it seems he will don the green jersey for the foreseeable future and develop his lethal partnership with Jayson Tatum.
This contract for Brown easily tops the biggest contracts in the NBA, with the previous largest being given to Nikola Jokic by the Denver Nuggets last summer at five years, $270 million.
Is This A Good Move By The Celtics?
The Celtics have operated this offseason under the assumption they needed to have less money, letting Grant Williams join the Dallas Mavericks for no returning player and settling for second-round picks. Their move for Kristaps Porzingis and subsequent extension shows the team has embraced its fate as a team over the second apron and needs to maximize what it can in the short term.
Jayson Tatum will be in line for a similar extension, tying the Celtics up to this core for the majority of the 2020s. The realities of having future draft picks frozen and no tax exceptions to use in the market can be scary, but the Celtics have one of the best rosters in the NBA already and are now further committing to making this group the one that brings home an 18th NBA championship.
