The 2022-23 season will go down in the Dallas Mavericks record books as a disaster. The team went from being a mid-table team for most of the season before bottoming out after acquiring Kyrie Irving, unable to defend, and with Luka Doncic looking hurt, depressed, and out of shape.
Tim Cato of The Athletic revealed that the Mavericks have spoken to Luka about lowering the preferred weight at which he plays for better results throughout 82 games.
“The Mavericks’ key figures have talked to Dončić about decreasing his preferred playing weight this summer.”
Doncic is listed at 230 pounds, a target he’s missed while coming into previous seasons. He is evidently in the phase his close friend Nikola Jokic was in until 2020, as the Serbian center was criticized for not being in shape. The second Jokic made that a priority, he became a two-time league MVP and now, an NBA Champion and Finals MVP.
Is Luka Doncic’s Conditioning A Major Concern?
Doncic has unquestionable skills on the court but his off-court regimen has always been criticized. This is a player who was rewarded with a mini fridge full of beer in the middle of the season for his iconic 60-21-10 game against the Knicks. He’s been spotted smoking hookahs and even drinking before crucial playoff games.
It hadn’t been a problem before, but with his body breaking down by February under a heavy workload last season, everyone recognizes Doncic needs to be smarter about taking care of his body. He’s been training hard for the FIBA World Cup, but hopefully, he can go through the tournament and bring the same energy into the start of the NBA regular season.
