After retiring in 2022, former Lakers center Dwight Howard went straight to Taiwan, where he played out the entire 2022-23 season with the Taoyuan Leopards. Despite being a major step back from his days as a big man for the Purple and Gold, Dwight embraced his stint in Taiwan and was seemingly happy to close out his career there.
But now, Dwight is keen on an NBA comeback and specifically named the Lakers as his team of interest. According to Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson, Howard wants to return to his former team to help them capture another championship.

Dwight was a core member of the Lakers’ 2020 title group, but he’s almost 40 now and is a full season removed from NBA action. To say there are concerns about his game would be an understatement at this point.
Still, it’s no secret that Rob Pelinka is looking for another big man, and if the Lakers are really considering Christian Wood, then Dwight Howard may also be a real option for them.
Howard Says Lakers Should Have Kept Their 2020 Roster
A lot has changed for the Purple and Gold since the 2020 bubble, and Howard’s departure is just one of them. Some changes have been for the better, of course, but there is still a sense that Pelinka should have done more to keep that group intact.
“But I do love the Lakers, man. We had the championship run there and I wish we would’ve had a chance to keep going because that was the squad right there. We had everything,” Howard said. “We had everything.”
The future is uncertain for D12, and his days in the NBA may be long over now. But no matter what happens, Lakers fans will forever be grateful for his play in 2020 and what he meant to that historic Lakers team.
As much fun as a reunion would be, it may just not be in the cards at this point in his career.
