Dennis Rodman is as unique a star as the NBA has ever seen. Not only was he wild off the court, but his skillset was crucial to the Chicago Bulls winning their second three-peat during the 90s.
Rodman was an elite defender, a proper pest. But what truly separated him from the rest was his rebounding. Arguably the greatest rebounder in NBA history, a fan’s video showing why he is the GOAT of that category went viral.
The video was titled, “Dennis Rodman deserves the title of ‘GOAT Rebounder’ for this play alone.”
The ball came off the rim with force, heading out of bounds. And ultimately, Rodman wasn’t even able to come up with it. But the way he dived and almost got his hands on a ball that would have been impossible for anyone to touch showed both his prediction skills and his tenacity. His hustle is on full display in the play and it’s what made him a superstar despite not being an elite scorer in the NBA.
Dennis Rodman was listed at 6’7, but his rebounding numbers would put centers in the NBA to shame. Throughout a 14-year career, Rodman averaged 13.1 rebounds per game. For seven straight seasons between 1992 and 1998, Rodman was the league’s rebounding leader. He averaged a whopping 16.7 rebounds per game in that stretch and had multiple seasons averaging over 18 rebounds per game.
Dennis Rodman Studied Rebounding Like A Science To Become As Good As He Did
Honing any skill to the level that you become the GOAT takes years of intense practice and study. Dennis Rodman broke down the science behind rebounding, as Isiah Thomas once explained.
“I never saw anybody scientifically break down rebounding the way Dennis Rodman did,” Thomas said. “This dude was counting the rotations on the ball on every player. He knew how long it was going to be in the air, how many times it rotated, where it was gonna hit, where it would bounce.
“I had never seen nobody break down rebounding like that in my life. He was a genius, man. Dennis Rodman was a flat-out genius when it came to basketball.”
The likes of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain have a huge case to be considered the GOATs of rebounding. But considering that Rodman did it despite being well below 7 feet tall is what makes it more impressive than anyone before or after him.
