The Golden State Warriors made an extremely bold step this summer, as they traded Jordan Poole a season after winning the championship for the surefire Hall of Famer Chris Paul.
Paul is going to be a steadying and mature figure for a Warriors locker room that’s coming back from a tough season. The arrival of CP bodes well for young players like Jonathan Kuminga, who shared his reaction to the trade with Sports Illustrated.
“I was surprised. Watching CP growing up, the way he plays a different type of basketball than the Warriors. Me being on the Warriors for the past two years now, we play a different type of basketball playing at a fast pace. We move off the ball a lot.”
Kuminga then showed some excitement for the possible fit of Paul on the Warriors roster, given the stylistic differences the team and player have.
“I’m just looking forward to seeing how it’s gonna work, and I feel like CP is a smart player. He has a lot of experience, and I feel like he’s gonna bring so much that we didn’t have on the team, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Draymond Green had expressed excitement for what Paul’s presence would do to the development of players like Kuminga. He could be massive impactful in getting Kuminga the bigger role he’s fought for since being drafted in 2022.
The Warriors Falling Behind In The West
The Golden State Warriors haven’t had the best offseason. Though they got off the long-term contract of Jordan Poole, they lost one of the best bench scorers in the NBA for Chris Paul. Paul is a far more measured guard who will highlight the stars around him, so he is a better fit. But Poole had a long-term upside that the Warriors have lost.
Donte DiVincenzo walked out the door and signed with the New York Knicks, with the Warriors’ best effort at replacing the hole in that position coming with the signing of Cory Joseph. They did make a good move by adding center depth beyond Kevon Looney, adding former Sun Dario Saric as a sweet-shooting big.
For a team that lost in the second round, the Warriors don’t look a whole lot better. Expectations from players like Kuminga and Moses Moody will be high, as their stepping up will be the difference-maker for the Warriors this season. For that reason, having CP3 as a bench guard would do wonders for them.
