Victor Wembanyama had some warning incoming from Kevin Garnett ahead of his debut with the San Antonio Spurs in the 2023-24 NBA season.
In a clip doing the rounds on social media, the former Boston Celtics superstar kept it real on why players would be after Wembanyama.
“He’s No. 1. Absolutely he has a target on his back. Coming from high school, I had a bunch of targets on my back. But that’s part of it.”

Garnett isn’t wrong, and he knows that better than anyone else. He was one of the high school prospects who was regarded highly before foraying into the NBA.
‘The Big Ticket’ was drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 1995 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, and became the first player to be drafted directly out of high school since 1975, and that’s something.
Over the course of his decorated career, KG was regarded as one of the most powerful forwards to have played the game. He was named to the All-NBA Team nine times and the NBA All-Defensive Team 12 times, in addition to being the NBA champion in 2008.
Whether Wembanyama can replicate the success remains to be seen.
Nikola Jokic And Giannis Antetokounmpo Didn’t Look Polished As Prospects Like Victor Wembanyama, According To Kevin Garnett
Prior to the 2023 NBA Draft, where Victor Wembanyama was all set to be the No. 1 pick, Kevin Garnett said his predecessors Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic weren’t as polished as the prospect the French teen was.
Speaking on Showtime’s KG Certified, the former Boston Celtics superstar stat told Paul Pierce that he had never seen someone like Wembanyama.
“S**t, Giannis, and Joker didn’t look this polished as a prospect at this age as a kid. So what you saying, he fits right into the narrative of what we’re saying.”
Hailed as the next-best generational prospect since LeBron James, the expectations for the tall and lanky center have reached sky-high levels, and Garnett is one of those who has high hopes for the Spurs rookie.
Only time will tell if Wembanyama can be the resounding star he has been touted to be in the NBA.
