The modern NBA is trying to find the balance between exceptions offense and defense, as not many top stars in the NBA are genuine two-way threats anymore. The offense has become more highlighted and valuable in recent years.

After Kevin Durant tweeted, ‘Offense wins you championships, brother’, fans were quick to pile on the two-time champion with questions about his theory.

Offense wins u championships brother https://t.co/FFM75G0n3P

— Kevin Durant (@KDTrey5) July 12, 2023

One fan didn’t want KD to use the lack of defense on the Phoenix Suns as an excuse if they came up short.

So if you don’t win a championship this year…. Don’t say it’s cause y’all couldn’t defend a soul.. and if anyone on your teams says that, shut them down like you do everyone else.

Because y’all have hella offense. Should be a 3 peat soon

One fan didn’t care for the question and criticized Durant for needing a superteam to win.

You’re considering one of the greatest offensive players ever, why can’t you win without a super team?

Another fan said that KD didn’t believe in his theory, or else the 2012 Thunder would have been champions.

How come you couldn’t get the chip with Russ and Harden in 2012? Young but very good offensive team against a very good defensive team. 🤨

One fan used a classic sports quote about offense winning games and defense winning championships.

Some fan put a fake Jordan Poole quote about how offense wins people b*tches.

One fan felt compelled to bring up Lakers vs. Nuggets from the playoffs, as the defensive Lakers couldn’t score to keep up with the Nuggets.

They didn’t watch nuggets vs lakers

Finally, a fan said the safest yet smartest thing about teams requiring both defense and offense to win.

It’s a combination of both, you can’t just be an offensive team that can’t play no defense. You have to be able to play some bit of D

— ValidHaitian (@haiti4eva) July 12, 2023

The last two champions were among the best offensive teams in the league and hung their hat on the ability to outscore opponents instead of restricting their production. The Nuggets and Warriors both cracked the code with imperfect defensive pieces, which could prompt KD to say what he did.

Is Defense Overrated In The Modern NBA?

As one of the fans said, there needs to be a balance between offense and defense. The Dallas Mavericks were electric offensively last regular season, but their complete lack of defense meant they stood no choice of making a playoff run, as they did in 2022 with a top-10 defense in the NBA.

You don’t need to be the 2004 Detroit Pistons, but defense is a valuable addition to any roster that teams scour the market for. The Suns tried their best to make similar moves after hiring a defensive-minded coach in Frank Vogel.

Durant averaged 29.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in the postseason with the Suns’ and will hope to unlock his game further on the offensive side to win the third championship of his career and lead the Suns to their first title in franchise history.
