The summer around Kyrie Irving ended up being much quieter than many expected. The free agent was expected to create a lot of free agency drama with posturing to extract the most money out of the Mavericks, but the sides reached a fair contract extension very quickly.

Even after Irving re-signed on a three-year, $126 million contract to stay in Dallas and help them return to the playoffs, controversial radio host Craig Carton had many disparaging things to say about the point guard.

“He’s a top 4 guard of all time, but he also happens to be a terrible knucklehead, a distraction, and a team killer.”

Irving has a spotty track record over the last few seasons, but the Mavs haven’t seen that from Irving in the few months, he has been on the team. The locker room respects him, and Irving can find a lot of joy in playing for the Mavs alongside Luka Doncic. He averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in 20 games for Dallas.

Will Kyrie Irving Request A Trade?

Irving has his long-term contract secured for now, but even that contract is just three years at maximum. It isn’t the long-term stability that Irving was hoping for, but the Mavs already offered him more than what anyone came close to out of respect for his talent. The team has done everything they can to appease him, except win games. If they start the season out slow with a lot of losses, an Irving trade request may not be too far in the future.

The Lakers will likely always be a trade destination for Kyrie, and a requested trade could finally lead to a reunion between him and LeBron James. Nonetheless, he’s a Maverick for now and can ignore the comments of a disgraced radio host who recently devoted a segment to attacking an 18-year-old player.
