The NBA has implemented a lot of changes over the past few years, and they’re about to add another one with the birth of the in-season tournament next season. Another change that could be in the works is a new expansion team (or teams) that may be coming to Las Vegas.
According to the NBA commissioner himself, there’s tremendous interest in the market, although nothing is imminent at this time.
“We will turn to expansion once those media deals are done,” Silver said, via Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press. “It’s not a sure thing. But as I’ve said before, I think it’s natural that organizations grow over time. There’s no doubt that there’s enormous interest in this (Las Vegas) market.”
Vegas has long been rumored to be the next NBA expansion team but it hasn’t yet come to fruition. Over the past few years, however, the city has added several professional sports teams and the NBA is projected to be the next in line.
Even more interesting is that LeBron James could have an interest in owning a potential Las Vegas franchise if it ever did join the league.
LeBron Wants His Own Vegas Team
As one of the pillars of the sport, it makes sense for LeBron James to become an owner after his playing career, and starting his own team in Las Vegas would be the perfect opportunity for him.
“That establishes the mark for expansion franchises, right? One of the reasons it was so important to get to $4 billion [the amount of money Mat Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns], now they know that Vegas expansion team will go to Fenway Sports Group and LeBron. I keep telling you this,” said Bill Simmons.
Vegas doe make perfect sense as an expansion city, but Seattle has also been thrown in as a possible location for a new team.
At this point, an expansion seems inevitable but it’s still too early to say where these teams might be. For now, we know that Vegas is up there with the strongest contenders.
