The modern NBA may have found the new face of the NBA with the older guard of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant in the final years of their career. Victor Wembanyama could be the face that runs the place very soon if he lives up to his potential.
His Summer League debut was one of the most anticipated games in recent memory, with the NBA announcing that the Spurs vs. Hornets game was the second-most watched contest in the summer tournament’s history.

The last Summer League game to get the title of most watched was the 2019 clash between the Knicks and Pelicans which featured the debuts of RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson. The game that held the title before that was Lonzo Ball’s debut in the 2017 Summer League for the Lakers against the Celtics.
Wembanyama’s debut didn’t go well, as he struggled to make any sort of an offensive impact on the game. He dominated in his second Summer League game before being shut down by the Spurs.
Victor Wembanyama Moves The Needle
We all love sports for the meritocracy it creates in terms of the biggest superstars, usually being the best players. But to be the face of the NBA, a player needs to marry on-court ability with marketability. Wembanyama seems like the perfect fit for that, though his early media experiences in the NBA prompted him to declare a three-month sabbatical from media interactions.
The Spurs are one of the smallest markets in the NBA but have a rich NBA heritage in terms of success. They’ve always had star draws, but Wembanyama may end up being their biggest due to us having never seen someone his size move around the court like a guard. Interest is sky-high already and the next time we see him play, he’ll be making his debut in the NBA.
