It has been some time since NBA legend Jerry West last played professional basketball. As one of the league’s earliest superstars, West was one of the best during his time and by the year he retired in 1974, his legacy was already immortalized forever.

Even still, Jerry West likes to remind some people of the truth about his game, and just how ruthless he really was during his heyday. In a viral clip, West revealed that his competitive nature was unmatched, even going so far as to call himself a wolf. Even modern-day Lakers star LeBron James couldn’t help but react to the clip that is making its rounds online.

It really should be no surprise that LeBron jumped in here. LeBron is one of Jerry’s biggest fans, and the two seem to have a long-standing respect for each other.

“I greatly admire what he’s accomplished,” said West on James. “It’s hard for me to believe that someone doesn’t recognize his greatness. This guy does everything, he’s a swiss army knife. And he’s competitive as hell. Frankly I wish people would leave him alone.”

LeBron and West do share some similarities in their careers. Besides being basketball royalty, they both played for the Lakers and are both some of the most scrutinized athletes of their day.

Jerry West Was A Cold-Blooded Killer

It’s tough for modern fans to truly grasp the magnitude of Jerry West’s NBA career, but there is no doubt that he carried the same competitive spirit that today’s top stars get celebrated for.

“I was not afraid. Everyone among competitive people, the word ‘dog’ comes up a lot … ‘that guy’s a dog’… Well, I was a wolf. I used to eat dogs.”

As a 14x All-Star, 12x All-NBA player, and NBA champion, there is no question that Jerry West is one of the greatest Lakers ever and his talent combined with his ruthless approach to the game, played a dual role in elevating his career.

As for James, he’s one who can appreciate that attitude, given all that he’s had to overcome during his NBA journey.
