As a 5x champion and 19x All-Star, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar knows more than most about what it takes to be an all-time great big man in the NBA. Over his 20-year career, very few have matched Kareem’s level of success and we’ve never really seen a big man do it not named Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell.
Victor Wembnayama is obviously on track to change all of that, but he hasn’t yet proven anything in the NBA. So on the cusp of Victor’s NBA debut, the Lakers legend provided some personal advice to the young Spurs star.
“Just be patient. Pick up what he can pick up as he goes along,” he said to ESPN’s Cassidy Hubbarth. “He’s not gonna get all at once, but he’s got a lot of potential. We’ll see what happens.”
Kareem was basically a star from the jump, as he averaged 28.8 points per game in his very first season. Things would only go up for Kareem from there, who retired as one of the best players ever. For Wemby, many were expecting similar levels of dominance from him but his Summer League debut was further evidence that it may take time for his game to develop.
The best thing for Victor to do now is just continue to play his game and let his team help him get better in various aspects of the game.
Will Wemby Have A Slow Start?
It’s impossible to be sure about how Victor’s game will develop over time, but it’s clear that there will be a process with him and the results may not be immediate. During his Summer League debut yesterday, he admitted he had no clue what he was doing out there.
“Honestly, I didn’t really know what I was doing on the court tonight but I’m trying to learn for the next games. The important thing is to be ready for the season.”
As the most hyped prospect in years, it’s important for Victor to turn off the outside noise and keep his focus on making progress as a player. But things could get ugly for him if he struggles like this during the season, and it will be more important than ever for him to stay calm and be patient with himself…
