The Dallas Mavericks have managed to retain Kyrie Irving in free agency, signing him to a three-year deal worth $126 million. There’s no doubt that this was a good deal for the team and the player. The Mavericks avoided losing Irving in free agency for nothing, while Irving got at least three years of guaranteed money.

It seems as though part of the reason that Kyrie Irving has stayed as a Maverick is due to the influence of Luka Doncic. In fact, Steve Bulpett of Heavy revealed that Doncic was the one who “pushed for Irving’s return”.

“According to multiple Heavy Sports sources, Irving worked hard to gain the trust and faith of his new teammates, but Doncic found it difficult to cede command of the offense. Word that Doncic pushed for Irving’s return may indicate he’s coming around on the need to find harmony and the opportunity for each to enhance the other.”

It makes sense that Luka Doncic would want Kyrie Irving back on the team. Irving is clearly the most talented teammate that Doncic has ever had, and it’ll be interesting to see what the duo can do next season.

This past regular season, Kyrie Irving put up 27.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 5.3 APG for the Dallas Mavericks while shooting 37.9% from 3PT range. Though he has had some availability issues, he is clearly a supreme talent that can impact the game with his very presence.

Luka Doncic Was Reportedly Unhappy About Kyrie Irving Trying To Recruit LeBron James To The Dallas Mavericks

There is no doubt that Luka Doncic wanted Kyrie Irving back on the Dallas Mavericks. However, previously, it was reported that Doncic was unhappy about Irving trying to recruit LeBron James to the Mavericks.

“It’s Kyrie saying, ‘I wanna play with LeBron, but I wanna get the max [contract]. Why don’t you take less, LeBron?'” Broussard said. “This also reminds me of Kyrie’s press conference after they got swept. Close sweep, but they did get swept by Boston, a year ago, right? … If’m Luka, I’m none too pleased. If I’m Luka, I really don’t wanna play with LeBron. LeBron was his idol. He loves LeBron. … If LeBron were to go Dallas with Luka, let’s just say it could happen. Obviously, Luka’s the best player at this point in their careers. But it still is so much now about LeBron and the quest to get a fifth ring.

It remains to be seen how the Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic partnership works out. The duo has the talent to make noise in the Western Conference, and we’ll see what ends up happening in the future.
