The Oklahoma City Thunder had a deal with a major blow during the 2022-23 season, considering that their No. 2 overall pick didn’t play a single minute of NBA basketball.

Chet Holmgren has been compared to Kevin Durant, and many expect him to become an elite player in the league. And after missing out on it in his first season, he will be aiming for the Rookie Of The Year Award next season. And he has a vote of confidence from his teammate.

A tweet read, “Your battery % shows the odds of Chet Holmgren winning ROY next season.” And Josh Giddey quickly responded on Twitter, saying, “My phone’s fully charged.”

Chet Holmgren missed out on a year of development in the NBA, but he now has the advantage of having observed the league from within for a year. He was also able to bulk up during his recovery from injury, adding weight and making himself more of a threat inside.

The 2023 draft class is stacked, players like Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson, the Thompson twins, and Brandon Miller are all potential stars in the league. As such, Holmgren will have to compete with some real talents, but he came in with such expectations in 2022, it’s just his time to prove them.

Chet Holmgren Dominated In His First Summer League Game After Being Out A Year

Chet Holmgren impressed in Summer League last season before picking up his injury. And he is picking up where he left off this year, dominating in his first return to competitive action in the NBA Summer League. Playing against the Utah Jazz, Holmgren put up 15 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks in a dominant performance.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will want to see more development out of Holmgren as Summer League goes on. If he can get some confidence with a dominant Summer League run, then he can begin the next season in earnest. Holmgren has said in the past that he, Josh Giddey, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander can be like the next Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, and James Harden and next season will be the time to prove if they can do it.
