The Boston Celtics are heading into arguably one of the most important seasons of the Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown era, as they failed to win a championship once again despite having one of the best teams on paper.
They added Kristaps Porzingis in a massive trade that sent Marcus Smart away, but they may be eyeing a long-term replacement for Smart with 2023 second-round pick Jordan Walsh. Walsh revealed one of his first interactions with a Celtics player came in the weight room with Grant Williams, who called him little and compared himself to a God.
“He told me I was little like a bug. He was like, ‘Everybody can’t be built like me, like a God.’ We were in the weight room and joking around, but it was funny talking to him.”

Williams just completed his fourth season in the NBA and is currently a restricted free agent. The Celtics have a massive salary bill upcoming, especially with a supermax extension for Jaylen Brown in the works. It’s likely that the Celtics choose to let Grant walk in the summer, as paying him $12.7 million per season could cost the Celtics over $50 million with luxury tax included.
The Dallas Mavericks are heavily linked to Williams, with the Charlotte Hornets also reportedly interested. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds this season.
The Celtics Go Championship Or Bust
The Boston Celtics were widely favored by many to be the best team in the Eastern Conference last season, with many arguing that they were the best team in the league. They lived up to that promise for most of the season and earned the No. 2 seed behind the Milwaukee Bucks. They struggled against the Hawks in round one and somehow managed to stave off elimination after going down 3-2 to the 76ers in the second round.
They admirably fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the Conference Finals before losing Game 7 and seeing their season end. Now with Smart gone and Porzingis in, the Celtics will look to continue their winning ways. The franchise has made four of the last five Eastern Conference Finals and will look to make another NBA Finals appearance in 2023-24 at least.
