Kobe Bryant isn’t just hailed as one of the greatest players in NBA history, but also as one of the most generous and giving people off the court. Kobe would do anything for the people he cared about. And his former teammate Lamar Odom found that out during a dark time in his life.
During an interview, Lamar Odom talked about how he fell into a gambling addiction after getting out of the NBA. This addiction led Odom to a massive gambling debt. Despite knowing Kobe was frugal, Odom called Kobe, who admonished him, but then paid off Odom’s debt, no questions asked.
“I’m out of the NBA. I f*cking picked up a gambling addiction. Really bad. I’m in a hole, I can’t get myself out of it. I don’t got the money to pay it. Everybody knows Kobe was like an extra frugal motherf*cker. Called him. After he cursed me out, what the f*ck you doing Lo? He said have your people call my people… Really deep. North of six figures. I ain’t got nobody to call but Kobe Bryant”.
Kobe was a true friend to Odom. He scolded him for his mistake, but then helped him out in a way that not many others were willing to do at the time. Clearly, Bryant shared a bond with Odom unlike any other and was willing to go out of his way to help his friend out of a very difficult situation.
The Side Of Kobe Bryant You Rarely Saw
On the court, Kobe Bryant was one of the most intense and frightening individuals you could ever hope to see. Bryant was ruthless, not stopping at anything in order to achieve success. It was this mentality that made him as successful as he was.
But off the court, Kobe was regarded to be a very generous person, someone who would go out of his way to try and help someone, or make someone’s day.
In 2008, Kobe Bryant met a young fan who was diagnosed with Leukemia, and spent a lot of time with him, even playing 1-on-1. Bryant truly wanted to help people in whatever way he could.
