Mark Cuban has come in for criticism as the owner of the Dallas Mavericks in recent years after failing to put a truly competitive team around Luka Doncic

While there are things he can be called out for, Cuban has been one of the best owners in the NBA  since he bought the Mavs in 2000. And he once explained how he cleverly managed to get more fans to follow the team using McDonald’s just after buying the franchise for $285 million.

“I paid $285 million for the Dallas Mavericks,” Cuban said in a video for GQ Sports. “I went to opening night of the 1999-2000 season. First game of the year, wasn’t sold out, energy wasn’t in the building. I’m a season ticket holder, a huge Mavs fan, I look around thinking, I can do a better job than this.

“So when I took over the Mavs, I didn’t get a big office. I didn’t give a sh*t about an office, I didn’t get a big desk, I didn’t give a sh*t about the big office. We had a sales bullpen… We had eight or nine, whatever, salespersons. I put my desk right in the middle of them. I put a phonebook and a printout of all our former customers. And right there next to them, I just started dialing, trying to sell the Mavericks.

“‘Ma’am, I know you’ve been to a Mavericks game before, but you realize now it’s less expensive to come to a Mavericks game than to take your family to McDonald’s? Our tickets start at $8 and McDonald’s and a coke is more than that. Why don’t you try us out, first game’s on me.’ I wanted everyone who worked with me to see that if I asked them to do it, I’ll do it.”

Mark Cuban is one of the most well-known billionaires in the world, and it’s easy to see why he has seen success as the owner of the Mavericks. Those ticket prices have gone up a lot since, the average price to watch the Mavericks in the regular season is about $61, but there are still some cheap seats available as well. The Mavs may have just had a down year, but the organization continues to thrive.

Mark Cuban Has Always Been An Unconventional Team Owner

Everyone may not like Mark Cuban’s style, but his success speaks for itself. There have always been some incredible stories regarding Cuban and the Mavericks, including the time he got so drunk with Dirk Nowitzki, that they bought a $140,000 bottle of champagne

He made his billions after starting with just $8,000, a truly inspiring story. NBA fans will always care about team performance, and Cuban and his organization needs to do better, but history shows that they might find a way to achieve true success again at some point.
