The 2023 NBA Draft had a lot of surprises, but there were also some moves that many expected. The Thompson twins, Amen and Ausar, were both expected to be lottery selections but ended up going in the Top 5 of the NBA draft.
Amen Thompson was drafted with the No. 4 overall pick by the Houston Rockets, while Ausar Thompson was drafted with the No. 5 overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. This meant that the twins have made NBA history before even stepping on the court.
No brothers in the league’s long history have been drafted in the Top 5 of the same draft, making this a unique and proud moment for their family.

Amen and Ausar Thompson both played in the Overtime Elite league before being drafted into the NBA, becoming the first players to be drafted from that route. Amen Thompson played for Team OTE in 2021-22, while his twin played for Team Elite. For the 2022-23 season, the two were teammates on the City Reapers that won the championship last season.
Both are listed as 6’7″ and play primarily as guards. Amen Thompson is a point guard who averaged 16.3 points per game to go along with 6.2 assists, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.4 steals last season. And Ausar is a shooting guard that can also play small forward, averaging 16.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game in 16 games during the 2022-23 season.
Amen And Ausar Thompson Are Looking To Answer Their Critics In Style
Coming from the Overtime Elite League, questions have been asked about the competition the two have faced during their young careers. But by being drafted with the 4th and 5th pick, Amen and Ausar have shown that NBA GMs don’t share the same doubts about them as some of their critics do. And while they will let their games do the talking, the twins also released a statement aimed at their doubters.
“When the time comes and I get to actually play against players in my draft, I’m going to be ready,” Amen said. “I’ve been waiting to do that for a long time.”
“You just have to run your race,” Ausar said. “Everybody is going to have an opinion. They’re not living it. Half the time, they’re not even looking deep enough into it.”
The twins have both joined rebuilding teams with solid young cores and will be looking to make their name in the NBA in their rookie season. While both have the honor of going Top 5, only one can be Rookie Of The Year, an honor they will have to fight for against top prospects like Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson.
