Russell Westbrook’s status ahead of the 2023-24 season is still up in the air, but what’s clear is the fact that he may not sign with the Phoenix Suns due to Frank Vogel.
While the point guard is set to become an unrestricted free agent this July, Vogel was recently appointed as the Suns’ head coach. Earlier, The Athletic’s Law Murray shed light on Westbrook’s future with the LA Clippers, given their renewed interest in a reunion with veteran guard Chris Paul.
“While Westbrook was seriously contemplating returning to the Clippers on that contract for slightly more than the veteran’s minimum, those sources said, that was before LA’s interest in Paul reached this degree,” Murray wrote.
“Trading for Paul, while Westbrook is still available, would be a way for the front office to get the player they want in place while forcing Westbrook to potentially take the same deal, but for undoubtedly a different role.”

He further added: “That could push Westbrook to pursue other teams, but it is unclear who the Clippers would be bidding against for Westbrook’s services. (Chicago? Miami? Portland? We know the [Los Angeles] Lakers and Suns with Frank Vogel aren’t on that list.)”
Westbrook’s disinterest in joining the Suns dates back to his tumultuous time with the Los Angeles Lakers in his first year with the side, where Vogel was handling the reins. His soured chemistry with the team and Vogel will surely be the primary reasons why the 34-year-old would be unlikely to even consider Phoenix as his next potential destination.
For now, reports suggest that the Clippers are keen on re-signing the explosive former MVP at a hometown discount. Only time will tell if that move pans out.
Russell Westbrook Was A Force For The LA Clippers Last Season
Soon after he linked up with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, Russell Westbrook was a force for the Clippers.
He averaged 15.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 7.6 assists in 21 games, and then did even better in the playoffs, notching up 23.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists in the First-Round series against the Suns.
What the numbers proved was his ability to contribute at a high level, and the Clippers are aware of what he brings to the table. It remains to be seen if they can indeed manage to re-sign him, even if they have plans of acquiring Chris Paul from the Wizards.
