Zion Williamson’s Contract Is No Longer Fully Guaranteed By The Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans have made a big decision on Zion Williamson's new deal.

Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans aren’t on the best terms right now, as the player is going through a rough moment in his career and also his personal life.

It seems like everything has worked against him right now and all he’s getting are bad news. The New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly mad at Williamson and have considered trading him away, but according to Brian Windhorst, they’ve made another decision regarding the player’s future (10:25 mark).

“I gotta tell you, I don’t think his value is that high right now. He has a contract that protects the Pelicans or whatever team from further injury. It’s not fully guaranteed but obviously his value in January was a lot higher than it is right now after another injury-plagued season,” Windhorst reported on ESPN’s “Keyshawn, JWill and Max” show.

As Windhorst said, this is a way for the Pelicans to protect their interests, and if Zion fails to meet their expectations, they have a way out with this deal. His five-year, $194.3 million contract kicks in next season, but now he won’t touch all of that money unless he clocks in the minutes the Pelicans want from him.

Williamson has shown that he can be a great player in the NBA, and his numbers prove that. The former No. 1 overall pick recorded 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 29 games with the Pelicans this season.

He earned his first All-Star nod, although his injury prevented him from playing. Zion has a big year ahead, as the Pelicans appear to be running out of patience with him and his injuries.

Zion Williamson Could Be Traded Before The 2023 NBA Draft

Added to the fact that his deal is not fully guaranteed now, Williamson could be moved by the Pelicans ahead of the 2023 NBA Draft. They reportedly want to move up to the top 3 in the big night, and Zion is the best piece they have for trade.

After three seasons in the association, Williamson has averaged 25.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He has the potential to mark an era in the NBA, but if his body keeps bothering him, the Pelicans will be better off moving him away and trying to build around another player.
