Dwyane Wade, without a doubt, is one of the greatest players of all time. Wade was a superstar during his time in the NBA and established himself with his incredible play. Wade called time on his legendary career in 2019, retiring with the Miami Heat. And now, Wade gave some insight into his decision to walk away from the game he loved.

Shannon Sharpe asked Dwyane Wade about LeBron James potentially retiring. While discussing LeBron James’ mindset, he gave some insight into his own thought process. He noted that while physically, he could keep playing, it was his mental exhaustion from the years in basketball that led to him deciding to retire from playing.

“That’s one of the hardest parts. If you physically can play, mentally you lose it quicker than even physical sometimes. Like mentally, I was done. I had 2-3 more years at a certain level, I could have averaged about 12-15 a game off the bench. Mentally, because of the injuries, because of all of this, it beat me down. I still loved the game.”

Wade had been struggling in the final years, especially after he left the Miami Heat in 2016. Wade got to play in his hometown for the Chicago Bulls, and briefly with his friend LeBron James in Cleveland, but it was clear that he was no longer the superstar player that he was during the prime of his legendary career.

Dwyane Wade Is The Greatest Heat Player Ever

Dwyane Wade would make his return to Miami in 2018, playing his final season with the team that drafted him and where he became an NBA superstar and a multiple-time champion. Wade’s final season was effectively a retirement tour, as he was given tributes before several games, and shown respect by NBA fans across the country.

During his final season, Wade was still putting up good numbers, averaging 15.0 points, 4.2 assists, and 4.0 rebounds. Wade also stated in the same interview that had he not retired, he would have made his way into the debate for being the greatest of all time.

Regardless of how Wade’s career ended, there is no denying how much of a legend he is. He is often considered one of the greatest players to play shooting guard, alongside names like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. And that is a true testament to the level of player Wade was during his run in the NBA.
