Point guard Kyrie Irving is one of the best players in the league when on the court, and he is highly regarded across the NBA for his shot creation and ballhandling ability. There’s no doubt that he’s an impactful player when on the court.
This summer, Kyrie Irving will be an unrestricted free agent, and though the Dallas Mavericks will be trying to keep him, there are likely other teams that will target him. According to a recent report from Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Phoenix Suns are interested in acquiring him.
“If there’s one dreamy framework that could become a reality, let’s not forget Phoenix’s strong overtures to acquire Kyrie Irving — another key point guard of this offseason — before Brooklyn dealt the dazzling ball-handler to Dallas. The Suns backed off their pursuit of Irving and refocused on landing a bigger prize in Durant, but Phoenix officials haven’t just abandoned the interest they held in Irving four months ago.”
As of right now, Kyrie Irving is eligible to sign a five-year, $272 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks. That is a huge amount of money, though it is unclear if the Mavericks will indeed offer him that amount. If they don’t then it is easy to see why the point guard would explore other options like the Phoenix Suns. Of course, any deal with the Suns will require the Mavericks to help with a sign-and-trade.
This season, Kyrie Irving averaged 27.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 5.5 APG. He definitely deserves a max contract when it comes to his play, but his availability has definitely lessened his value overall.
Kyrie Irving Reportedly Wanted The Dallas Mavericks To Trade For LeBron James
Even though a number of teams want to acquire him, it seems as though Kyrie Irving is still heavily considering staying with the Dallas Mavericks. In fact, a previous report revealed that he wants the team to trade for LeBron James.
Per Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes: “A new twist has emerged in the LeBron James-Kyrie Irving reunion plot, as league sources have told Bleacher Report Irving wants the Dallas Mavericks to explore trading for LeBron James this offseason to create a Big 3 alongside himself and Luka Doncic.”
There’s no doubt that this would be an elite superteam. Unfortunately, due to new CBA rules, LeBron James joining the Dallas Mavericks is extremely unlikely. However, nothing is impossible in the league, and we’ll see what ends up happening in the future.
