Kyrie Irving will surely hit paydirt if the Dallas Mavericks will re-sign him in the offseason — a move they are optimistic about.
The mercurial guard is eligible for a five-year, $272 million contract at the Mavericks, or will be making roughly around $202m for years at another team. But team GM Nico Harrison is mighty confident about having Irving back in their ranks.
“I think the things that he said along the way about how he feels here, how he feels appreciated, how he feels accepted and allowed to be himself – those are the things that he said kind of consistently,” Harrison said, via Yahoo! Sports. “That’s what gives me the optimism that he wants to be here.”
Despite trading for the 31-year-old ahead of the trade deadline, Dallas saw a 7-18 slump to end their season and missed the play-in tournament after finishing 11th in the West. On his part, Harrison was supremely confident that the Irving-Luka Doncic pairing would bode well for the Mavericks.
“I think the two work together,” Harrison said. “I think Luka and Kai work together.” He further added: “I think when we have that talented of a player – that talented of two players – I think they work together.
Only time will tell if Irving will stay in Dallas, or whether other teams will make a beeline for him in the summer.
Luka Doncic Gets Real On Playing Alongside Kyrie Irving In The Future
While Kyrie Irving refused to do an exit interview, sparking speculations about his future with the side, Luka Doncic was keen on having the prolific guard suit up with him.
“I mean, yeah. I think it’s a great fit,” the Slovenian said, during his exit interview. “Obviously, people are going to say no. I mean, I look at the results we’re having, but you know, as I said, chemistry and relationships take time. I wish he can still be here.”
During his time with the Mavericks, Irving has averaged 27.0 points, 6.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in 20 games. And with Doncic, who has been a consistent and lethal shooter, Dallas will look to fit their roster with the right pieces to give the duo a better shot at winning a title.
In all probability, Irving is most likely to re-sign unless a contender like the Lakers can figure out how to sign and trade for him in the offseason.
