The New York Knicks appeared to be set to land Donovan Mitchell last year before the Cleveland Cavaliers showed up and ruined their plans. The talented guard was sent to the Cavs in a big move that apparently worked for both teams.

The Knicks didn’t like this situation at all, but the team is reportedly ready to make another run at Mitchell’s services soon and finally put their hands on this player.

“While the Knicks will search elsewhere via the trade market this summer to augment their roster in hopes of taking the next step toward title contention, Mitchell’s status will continue to bear watching over the next two years due to his ongoing flirtation with his hometown team,” wrote the New York Post‘s Peter Botte.

Mitchell became a top target for the Knicks last offseason, and it was a big shock when the Cavaliers landed him. Danny Ainge reportedly wanted to get as much as possible from the New Yorkers, and when they saw the high price they needed to pay for the former Utah Jazz player, they ruled themselves out of the race.

But now, things could be different as Mitchell is playing for a different team. The Cavaliers have an exciting project that has him as the cornerstone. Mitchell can become a bigger figure on the Cavs, but if he doesn’t compete for big things, the guard would probably look for a chance of airs.

Donovan Mitchell Led The Cleveland Cavaliers To The 2023 NBA Playoffs

During his first season with the Cavs, Mitchell did exactly what he was expected to do and led his team to the postseason, clinching the No. 4 berth in the Eastern Conference standings. He was even named a top-5 player in the league by his head coach.

Ironically, he faced and lost to the New York Knicks in the first round of the players, getting outplayed by the team that could land him in the first place. The Cavs will try to make some moves and return stronger next season.

In 68 games this season, he averaged 28.3 points, 4.4 assists and 4.3 rebounds with the Cavaliers. They will be ready to bounce back next season and make a deep playoff run.
