Kevin Durant’s arrival to the Suns changed things in a drastic way for the franchise. Pretty much overnight, the pressure mounted on the organization to assemble the best team possible and put themselves in the best position to win. We already know what happened with former head coach Monty Williams, and now we are finally finding out what the plans are for Deandre Ayton and Chris Paul.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Suns will explore trade opportunities for CP3 and Deandre Ayton this summer, likely meaning one or both will be on different teams next season.
“The Suns insist that they’re still working through several possibilities on Paul’s future and reiterated that to his representatives later Wednesday afternoon, sources said. Phoenix plans to explore trade opportunities including Paul and Deandre Ayton that could alter the franchise’s roster landscape ahead of a final decision on Paul’s partially guaranteed contract, sources said.”
In the case of Deandre Ayton, his future with the franchise has been in question for years now thanks to inconsistent energy and play on both ends of the floor. Still, he is expected to bring back a decent package in any trade deal.
For Paul, however, the Suns may go so far as to waive the Hall-of-Fame point guard if they cannot find a suitable deal.
“Paul continues to want to return to Suns and partner with Booker and Durant,” Woj wrote on Twitter. “Nevertheless, Paul and his reps want organization to make a decision well ahead of June 28th deadline to guarantee his deal so that Paul can proceed into marketplace if he’s indeed waived.”
A New Era In Suns Basketball
Frank Vogel is the new coach for the Suns now, and while we don’t yet know what players he will be coaching, we do know how he plans to have this team playing:
“This is the beginning of a new era in Phoenix Suns basketball,” Vogel said. “And it’s going to be an exciting one. … When we get out there and play, we’re going to be scrappy as hell.”
Only time will tell how the Suns stack up against the rest of the West, but it’s clear that new owner Mat Ishbia is doing whatever he takes to bring his squad team to their maximum potential.
