Frank Vogel was the head coach of the 2020 NBA Championship-winning team of the Los Angeles Lakers. Vogel was fired by the Lakers ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season.
After being out of work for almost a year, Vogel landed the head coaching job with the Phoenix Suns. During his introductory press conference, Vogel revealed how coaching LeBron James and Anthony Davis helped him learn how to manage the egos of NBA stars.
“I think there was lessons learned, but I think the experience of dealing with those guys in L.A. really gave me a PhD in the head coach, star-player partnership. Where we’re going to present plans to them, and we’re not going to ask them to do too much.
“The job is going to be done at a high level in terms of creating the game plans and how we’re going to play, style of play, all those types of things. But allowing them an opportunity to weigh in on what we’re doing. I think those partnerships are key, I feel like I hit it out of the park with those guys in L.A., and I feel like I’m going to do the same thing with these guys here.”

Frank Vogel’s experience of coaching superstars must have been taken into consideration by the Phoenix Suns. After all, he will be required to handle the egos of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton this season.
Vogel claims the Suns will play a ‘scrappy’ style of basketball during the 2023-24 NBA season. Can the veteran head coach bring an NBA Championship to the valley? We will find out in a year or so.
Frank Vogel Has Already Had Great Conversations With Kevin Durant And Devin Booker
Let’s be honest, keeping Kevin Durant and Devin Booker is a top priority for Frank Vogel and the Phoenix Suns. After all, the dynamic duo will play the most crucial role throughout the season.
Just days after taking the helm of the team, Vogel revealed he is already on good terms with Durant and Booker.
“I don’t have a lot of experience prior to this process,” Vogel said. “I did coach Devin in, I believe, his first All-Star game a couple years back. So that was fun, and I had met KD a few years back at one of the other All-Star games, I think when I was with the Pacers. So limited experience there, but had great conversations with both of those guys after being hired. A lot of our beliefs are really aligned, a lot of our expectations and hopes for what we want to do to this league this year, we’re all very excited about it.”
Apart from building a great relationship with Durant and Booker, Vogel has another target on his checklist. The 2020 NBA champion wants to make sure that Deandre Ayton reaches the All-Star level under his coaching.
The Suns finished with a 45-47 record in the 2022-23 NBA season. Will they be able to finish with a better record this time around? That’s the goal for Vogel.
